Manufacturing Engineer

Fortive Radford, VA

The manufacturing engineer provides first-level technical support to their motors production area and serves as the process expert for associates and supervisory staff in the area. In this capacity they are responsible for maintaining and improving these processes.

Key Responsibilities:

* Identify and propose new and innovative opportunities for waste, labor, and scrap reduction; build thorough business cases for project justification.

* Serve as Manufacturing Engineering consultant to Design Engineering, Marketing and Quality as needed.

* Champion and support Lean principles such as Standard Work, Poke-Yoke, Visual Management, Variation Reduction into daily operations.

* Work across disciplines (design, purchasing, quality) to champion projects or drive issues to resolution.

* Support day-to-day needs of a fast-paced motors production environment.

* Support and advise motors design team on design for manufacturability.

* Create and update work instructions and standard work documentation.

* Work with operators and other engineers to contain and countermeasure process or product failures.

* Train new associates on key process steps, train existing associates on process updates and changes.

* Create or update process routings that accurately capture labor time and process sequence.

* Gather Voice-of-Process data and bring hidden factory to light to identify improvement areas.

* Provide recommendation proposals for capital expenditures and generate Capital Appropriation Request documents for submittal.

Required Skills and Experience:

* BS in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.

* Self-directed, able to prioritize based on greatest business need.

* Strong problem solver with a passion for problem solving.

* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

* Able to read and interpret blue prints and schematics, basic knowledge of GD&T standards.

* Able to use basic mechanical measurement equipment (ie: calipers, micrometers, indicators).

* Able to multi-task; comfortable managing multiple long term projects while still completing the day-to-day actions of the production area.

Desired Skills and Experience:

* 1-5 years manufacturing engineering experience.

* Process automation or machine design experience (PLCs, LabView, other automated controls or languages)

* 3D or 2D modeling (Solidworks, Creo, AutoCAD, etc.)

* Manufacturing project management experience or new product/production cell launch experience.
