Job Purpose/Overview

  • Provide S&F with advanced tax technical skills and people leadership by managing Banfield's income, indirect and controversy tax functions.
  • Will act as a custodian and co-pilot to the entire business for all issues related to Banfield's tax compliance with applicable state and local laws and regulations, while identifying and implementing tax savings opportunities.
  • Will lead, coach, and engage the associates responsible for all tax matters and will independently manage all aspects of tax controversy engagements including tax quality assurance oversight.

Key Responsibilities

  • Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team.
  • Create, refine, improve, and streamline tax-related systems and processes, implementing opportunities to mitigate all forms of tax audit exposure from a tax technical and/or functional process standpoint.
  • Ensure the accuracy and timeliness of all indirect and income tax filings and supporting information; Correspond with auditors, analyze assessments, contest audit findings, coordinate audit responses, and manage personnel resources assigned to controversy engagements.
  • Hire, develop, and train new and current direct reports, including performance management, coaching, guiding, and assessing team for career growth; Manage the team's workload for the preparation and review of calculations and filings associated with taxes for various entities (i.e., state tax reconciliations and filings, property tax filings, and business tax filings).
  • Review the work product and the development of work plans for various compliance cycles prepared by other tax associates. Approve the research performed by other tax associates on technical tax issues related to business developments or changes in tax law, making recommendations to senior leadership for compliance with statutory, administrative, and judicial law with consideration given to editorial interpretation.
  • Review formal protest letters that have been drafted by other associates and negotiate audit assessments with government audit teams from all jurisdictions to minimize tax exposures.
  • Mitigate Banfield's risk of tax audit exposure and reduce the dollar value of audit assessments by managing the tax controversy process, corresponding with auditors, analyzing assessments, contesting audit findings, and coordinating audit responses.
  • Oversee vendor relationships

Job Specifications/Qualifications

  • Education & Professional Qualification
    • Required Type of Degree: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
      • Field of Study: Tax, Accounting or Finance
    • Required CPA designation; Master's degree in Taxation preferred
  • Knowledge/Experience
    • Years of Experience Required: 6
      • In what area: Professional tax experience with strong financial skills and a solid understanding of GAAP required; Big 4 public accounting experience preferred.
    • Required Two years' experience in a tax management or similar position.
    • Required Demonstrated ability to build and lead an effective team of technical professionals, develop talent, and motivate direct reports.
    • Required Familiarity with complex tax returns, ASC 740 principles, associated compliance, and treasury operations required.
    • Required Management of complex income tax and treasury projects including personnel oversight and cross-functional representation while exhibiting a sense of urgency required.
    • Preferred Health care background (veterinary or human healthcare, pharmaceutical, etc.).

Special Working Conditions

  • Ability to work at a computer for long periods of time.
  • Project timelines and work volume / deadlines may often require more than 40 hours per week to complete essential duties of this job.
  • Must have mental processes for reasoning, remembering, mathematics and language ability (reading, writing, and speaking the English language) to perform the duties proficiently.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form and to solve problems involving several variables.
  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as well as manipulate (lift, carry, move) up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm-hand-finger dexterity with the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard and operate necessary equipment.
  • The noise level in the work environment is normally moderate.
