The Department of Dental Sciences has an opening for a Dental Assistant 1; this position is 30 hours a week.

Primary Purpose:

To perform fundamental duties assisting a licensed dentist; perform clerical functions of a dental office; perform related work. This is the first in a series of three dental assistant classifications.

Responsibilities:

1. Dental procedures. Typical fundamental duties: under supervision of a licensed dentist – retracts patient's cheek, tongue, and other tissue; removes water syringes; takes, exposes, and develops x-rays of the mouth, gums, jaws, and/or teeth; applies topical medications; places rubber dams in patient's mouth; removes excess cement from and adjacent to crowns, bridges, and orthodontic bands; places matrix bands; performs dietary and salivary analysis; demonstrates oral care procedures and techniques; removes and replaces ligature wires; removes sutures; charts patient's mouth; performs infection control procedures flushes evacuation system with chemical cleansers.

2. Office procedures. Typical duties: completes reports on patient treatment, x-rays, keeps records of services rendered; keeps dental records current with medical history.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience: performing fundamental duties of a dental assistant as outlined above; completing dental charting and notations; performing clerical duties associated with a dental office; OR completion of a Dental Assistant Fundamentals course.

Examination:

Rating of education and experience. You will receive a score based on your answers to the questions on the exam. You must receive a minimum rating of (60) to pass this examination. Notification of your test results will be available online once the exam has been reviewed and a rating assigned.
