Overview

The Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner practices under the clinical supervision of the Medical Director of Cardiology, demonstrates competency and efficiency in the care of the cardiology patient. This position demonstrates competency in assessing, diagnosing and treating the cardiology patient in accordance with delineation of privileges; Demonstrates "strong" ability to organize and prioritize patient care activities; Selects and interprets laboratory and diagnostic testing; Communicates medical assessment and plan to patient and attending physician; Completes medical record documentation in a timely manner; and assumes on call and rotation schedule as required. The primary responsibilities will be hospital based or office based to include discharges, admissions, non-invasive testing and daily rounding with all cardiology physician groups.

ResponsibilitiesCompletes accurate and necessary history and physical examination to assure assessment of patient condition and needs.Orders/interprets appropriate diagnostic tests and documents appropriately.Formulates clinical impression/diagnosis/plan based on clinical findings.Initiates and documents appropriate treatment plan.Demonstrates ability to perform the following procedures:

* Suturing

* Suture removal

* Wound care

* Defibrillation

* Arterial blood draws

* Ordering/administration of oxygen

* Administering emergency medication

* Administering intravenous fluids or blood transfusions

* Obtaining written consents for surgical procedures and research protocols.

* Performing venous and arterial puncture for obtaining samples and for administering medications prescribed by attending physician

* Removing, upon order of the attending physician, transfemoral intra-aortic balloon catheter

Demonstrates competency in the performance of exercise tolerance testing within Non-Invasive Cardiology.Demonstrates familiarlity with all cardiology diagnostic testing and therapeutic interventions.Maintains effective consultation and collaboration with Medical Staff.Facilitates appropriate referral of patients.Participates in departmental/hospital committees as requested.Participates in departmental/hospital-wide quality improvement programs.Completes medical record documentation in a timely manner.Assumes on call and rotation schedules as required to meet patient care and stafing needs.Demonstrates commitment to continued growth through attendance at educational programs.Maintains working knowledge of the various stages of growth development and health status of these wide populations. Utilized appropriate resources.Demonstrates knowledge of the Scope of Practice for Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioners in New York State; CVPH Medical Staff Bylaws, Emergency Care Center Policies, Protocols, Procedures and Standards of medical practice.Regularly attends departmental meetings.Other duties as assigned.QualificationsLicensed as a NYS Certified Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner.Three years of clinical experience as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner; or Nurse Practitioner with minimum of five years RN experience.ACLS required.DEA privileges required.Two-Five years of previous Cardiology experience required.Demonstrated ability to facilitate the collaborative management of the cardiology / cardiothoracic / vascular patient.
