To foster and grow the nationalmanufacturing ecosystem, the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM)Institute has formed a national, public-private partnership to accelerateresearch, development and demonstration in the application of collaborativerobotic technologies in the manufacturing environment. Based in Pittsburgh, theARM Institute is a newly established national nonprofit, which was founded byCarnegie Mellon University and whose prospective membership includescommitments from 231 partners from industry, academia, local governments andnonprofits across the country.

The motivation for the ARM Instituteis to increase U.S. competitiveness in robotics applied primarily inmanufacturing environments. ARM seeks to empower American workers to competewith low-wage workers abroad; create and sustain new jobs to secure U.S.national prosperity; lower the technical, operational, and economic barriersfor small- and medium- sized enterprises (SMEs) as well as large companies toadopt robotics technologies; and assert U.S. leadership in advancedmanufacturing. The vision of this institute includes robots workingcollaboratively with humans on the assembly line and in material handling,growing productivity and precision while freeing humans from low-value addedactivities.

Job Summary

The Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing(ARM) Institute is looking for an Expertin Residence with a wide breadth of familiarly, passion and experience withindustrial robotics, automation, autonomous systems, perception, manipulationand understanding of their potentials, challenges and risks.

This position will work within a smallintegrated team to oversee, guide, assess and shape the ARM's technicalinvestments and transition to persistent, consortium developed intellectualproperty. These investments represent an average of fifteen to twenty ongoingtechnical projects for a nominal total investment of 10-20 million dollars peryear.

This position will assess the adequacy andmaturation of these ARM projects, track technical deliverables and provideguidance and insights towards achieving both project and ARM objectives. Itwill develop an aggregated assessment of achievements, needs and gaps for inputto the ARM roadmapping process. It will engage with ARM Technical AdvisorCommittee (TAC) members to prepare and present results and advancements to thegreater ARM member community. It will investigate, develop and execute newmetrics for assessment, test and evaluation of project demonstrations. It willshape and manage the technical content of code and data repositories. It willalso engage members to assess membership needs and interests in futuredirections.

The position offers opportunities to workon a wide range of problems, impact research directions, shape technologyadoption and work closely with academia and industry while developing anexpanding set of skills.

This position reports to the ChiefTechnical Officer.

Qualifications andSkills

* Understanding of core technologies of a roboticsystem including perception, manipulation, mobility, planning and control

* Ability to articulate domain-specificchallenges, critical issues and current state of the art and state of thepractice

* Understanding of issues of manufacturing, themanufacturing process and automation within manufacturing

* Experience developing, implementing or managingrobotic or autonomous systems projects

* Experience with programming languages such asROS, C/C , Java, Python, MATLAB, specifically in the ability to assess code

* Experience with system software for control,modeling, simulation or prediction of robotics systems or systems of systems

* Ability to engage and interact effectively withboth academia and industry leaders and innovators

* Strong presentation skills, excellent writtenand verbal communication skills

* Ability to work both independently and with ateam

Requirements

* PhD in robotics related field with 5 or more years' experience in execution or development of robotics research effort or Master in robotics related field with 10 or more years' experience in program execution or oversight in robotics related investment or integration effort.

* Principal Investigator, lead scientist, program supervisor ideal but not required.

* Experience in aspects of business aspects of technology adoption (to include startups) desired but not required.

Responsibilities

* Become the ARM technical expert for assignedprojects intimately knowing the key challenges, execution plan, transitionopportunities and risks to properly assess maturity

* Participate and engage in weekly technicaltelecons with projects to track progress and provide feedback and resources forissues

* Attend and assess initial, interim and finaldemonstrations for projects correlating results with deliverables. Develop andrecommend test and evaluation metrics and measures, lead test execution, andanalysis for projects

* Review and assess project deliverables fortransition viability including but not limited to; review of productcomponents, independent test and evaluation, code review, code completeness

* Define, establish and oversee data and coderepositories. Work with software working group to assure delivery andpopulation of required deliverables.

* This position will require overnight travel upto 20% of the time as well as some local travel.
