A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available at the University of South Dakota in Dr. Paula Mabee’s lab in the Department of Biology. The NSF-funded project seeks to capitalize on the convergence of fast-paced advances in machine learning (ML) and the high level of biological knowledge now available in a structured machine-readable format to create a new framework that allows machines to automatically identify the biodiverse traits of organisms from images without a large set of training data. In particular, this position will provide the formalized biological knowledge (anatomy ontology, phylogenies) to the ML team and work closely with them to iteratively train the machine to exploit this information. They will help prepare an image-based training set where traits have been labeled on 3D mouse and 2D fish images. They will help develop, test, and evaluate predictions; they will assist in ensuring that results are replicable and reusable.
Applications must include a CV, three letters of reference, and a cover letter that expresses the candidates interest in the position and highlights their qualifications. Please direct questions about the position to Dr. Paula Mabee, email@example.com.
