Job Summary

Generates ideas and content for a variety of research-related publications, including the Research Annual Report, monthly and quarterly newsletters and social media instances; reviews, generates and updates content for the Research Institute web site; provides editorial support for a variety of research-related events and initiatives; and, through regular communication with investigators and others, stays abreast of significant research developments.

Job Responsibilities

1. Web Content / Electronic Media (15%)

* Review, edit, rewrite (as needed) and regularly update content on the Research Institute web site, including background information and statistics on the Institute, laboratory group and affinity group sites, among others.

* Suggest changes to content and initiate review process with key stakeholders to ensure accuracy and approval

* Develop monthly "flash" content for external site to keep the revolving information fresh and current.

* Develop, maintain and update "information sheets" for use in grant applications, coordinating with various CHOP and Penn department and division leaders to ensure accuracy of information.

* Develop and/or review other web content as required.

* Suggest concepts/stories for inclusion in the Research Institute's growing social media presence.

2. Reports, Newsletters, Brochures and Special Events (65%)

* Write/edit articles for Bench to Bedside as assigned, generate story ideas, review and edit content, assist in facilitating the review and approval of content by key stakeholders.

* Assist in writing, editing and proofreading the Research Annual Report, participating in concept meetings and working with department director on content outlines and communication strategies.

* Solicit, organize and track stakeholder edits and contributions to the Research Annual Report.

* Compile statistics, key numbers and current research staff credentials and affiliations for the annual report and other uses.

* Collect data, write, and proofread/edit materials for special reports, including departmental or center brochures and other collateral materials.

* Generate and send biweekly "E-News" e-mail newsletters.

* Edit and format weekly event calendars and weekly research news digest.

* Assist in editing, formatting or otherwise supporting marketing collateral from research-related groups and centers, and for special research-related events.

4. Investigator Contact (15%)

* Maintain ongoing contact with investigators and key research leaders to keep abreast of significant research developments.

* Work with department director on messages and strategies with investigators to further enhance and refine communication with investigators.

5. Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

e.g., special projects, institutional grant proposals, Stokes Symposium and poster day materials, etc.

Required Education and Experience

* Bachelor's Degree

* At least three years writing and editing experience in a deadline-driven environment

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

* Bachelor's Degree

* At least three years writing and editing experience in a lab and/or clinical research environment required.

Additional Technical Requirements

* Demonstrated excellence in writing lay scientific prose

* Ability to balance multiple projects at once

* Thorough familiarity with Microsoft Word

* Excellent writing skills

* Knowledge of AP and AMA styles

* Ability to work accurately and independently while paying strict attention to detail

* Ability to work well within a team structure and interact successfully with staff at varying levels of the institution

* Adaptability to handle varied projects, always maintaining and intellectual and professional approach
