As a SHEET METAL MECHANIC (AIRCRAFT), WG-3806-5/8/10, you will perform sheet metal maintenance on aircraft and components. This includes remove, fabricate, repair, modify and install primary sheet metal parts, assemblies using power shears, brakes, sliproll machines, crimpers and beading machines.

Major Duties - This is NOT an all-inclusive list:

* Inspects and troubleshoots aircraft structures such as fuselage, tail, wings, cowlings and stabilizers.

* Aligns component structures and airframe using precision optical measuring instruments, plumline and level.

* Inspects, repairs, fabricates and replaces honeycomb and fiberglass structural assemblies.

* Sets up, operates and maintains power shears, metal brakes, rolls, dimpling machines, drills, saws, heat-treating furnaces, hardness testers, arc and oxyacetalene welders and other metal working equipment and tools of the trade.

* May assist authorized firefighters in the performance of fire/crash/rescue duties as required.

* Develops patterns and lay out, cuts, forms, joins, assembles and installs sheet metal items on aircraft.

* Sets up burring, turning and bending machines.

* Use of more complicated instruments such as protractors, calipers (snap ring, height, depth, dial), and screw pitch gauges is required.

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Experience or training that has provided the candidate with the ability to plan, manufacture, and install cylindrical, square, or rectangular-shaped objects that have easily constructed fastenings such as single and double-hem edges and single, double or grooved seams.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: WG-10 Level - Must have 18 months of experience or training in planning, layout, and construction skills to manufacture items and systems with dovetailed seams, set-in-bottom seams, burred-bottom seams, or wired or lock seams. Experience using more complicated shop tools and equipment. Experience in using metals including stainless steel, copper sheet, magnesium, honeycomb material and alloys. Experience demonstrating the use of more complicated mathematical calculations and complicated measuring instruments. WG-08 Level - Must have 12 months of experience or training planning, manufacturing, and installing cylindrical, square, or rectangular-shaped objects that have easily constructed fastening. Experience cutting and forming by using basic hand and powered tools such as hammers, chisels, hand snips, band and circle saws, squaring shears, seamers, bar folders, breaks, and stakes. Experience assembling parts by seaming, bolting, screwing, riveting, tacking, spot-welding, or soldering. Experience demonstrating a basic understanding of using measuring instruments. WG-05 Level - Must have 6 months of experience or training which demonstrates the ability to use common hand tools, power tools, measuring instruments and make repetitive repairs. Must have basic knowledge of the type of work performed by the occupational series. Provide assistance to the journeyman by performing the simpler and routine duties of the trade.
