Position Summary:

We're looking for a general assignment reporter who will help sharpen our daily KPCC newscasts and contribute to as we relaunch that site under the Southern California Public Radio umbrella. The right candidate for this job is a quick study who understands the region and thrives when taking on a wide-range of topics.

The GA reporter will bring strong journalism fundamentals, knowledge and curiosity to daily and enterprise reporting. You are a clean writer and creative thinker who consistently considers the audience first in story selection and execution.

You will report, write and produce on-air reports, post online stories, and use social media and web tools to report, engage sources and listeners/users and develop reporting projects. The reporter will also contribute ideas and act as a resource to other news staff. The reporter's shift will cover midday into early evening, so schedule flexibility will be required.

This position will be either a Reporter I OR Reporter II-level position depending upon the most qualified candidate's experience. The Reporter II is a higher-level position that varies from the Reporter I to include the following attributes in addition to those outlined under "Position Responsibility":

* Covers a beat(s)/area of expertise/broad variety of assignments

* Breaks stories

* Cultivates sources; Embraces HEARKEN and other audience facing inquiries

* Delivers stories with fully developed on-air style and originality in writing

Position Responsibility:

* Provides coverage of Southern California issues across a broad spectrum.

* Initiates, researches, writes, produces, and reports news and feature stories and segments for broadcast and digital platforms.

* Does live two-ways on news programs and talk shows.

* Contributes story ideas and assists in fine-tuning others' ideas.

* Assists other reporters, producers and editors.

* Provides additional material as needed for digital platforms, including photographs, and assists with the development of digital reporting projects.

* Keeps up-to-date on current events (local, national and international).

* Writes and edits copy as required.

* Acquires sound for production, which includes, but is not limited to, off-site interviews and walkthroughs.

* Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

* Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.

* Reporter I Level: At least two years of relevant professional journalism experience.

* Reporter II Level: At least three years of relevant professional journalism experience.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

* Demonstrated radio reporting, digital news and production skills.

* Professional on-air delivery.

* Ability to report, evaluate and integrate information quickly and translate for SCPR audiences.

* Ability to perform a variety of assignments thoroughly.

* Commitment to learn and enact best journalism practices.

* Experience in or familiarity with public radio news.

* Ability to use sound, when available, to create scenes that engage the listener and convey the emotion of the story.

* Ability to consistently produce timely and substantive reports on a tight deadline.

* Proficient in use of recording and production equipment.

* Ability to develop stories with multiple interviews, scene changes, and strong knowledge of subject matter.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

* Fluency in Spanish preferred.

* Fluency in other languages used by significant portions of Southern California communities desirable.
