IT Infrastructure Engineer - Network

Provides daily ongoing deployment, configuration, support, administration, maintenance and technical solutions to various technology components that make up the IT Infrastructure environment.

This position requires work in support of the Company's contract with the United States Department of Education (“ED“). As such, the United States Government requires that any applicant for this position must complete United States Government security clearance. Effective June 1, 2018, ED has informed Nelnet that security clearance applications for foreign nationals are not being accepted or processed. In light of this direction from ED, Nelnet will be unable to hire applicants without United States citizenship for such positions.


Develops or modifies IT Infrastructure to meet business objectives. Maintain and implement technical solutions, specifications, and documentation for various sized projects or daily support initiatives. Works with multiple customers, stakeholders, and system owners to produce requirements, determine feasibility, analyze cost/benefits requirements, and recommend design solution options. Provide training and technical support for users with varying levels of IT knowledge. Completes routine preventative measures and maintains/monitoring network security.



Bachelor's degree in Information Science or related field and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Cisco CCNA or equivalent experience desired


Broad technical experience and understanding of enterprise network infrastructure and design to include the following disciplines: routing/switching, data center, wireless, security, collaboration, virtualization, disaster recovery/high availability, acceleration technologies, cloud provider/services, software defined networking (SDN).

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills interacts well with technical and non-technical clients.
  • Familiar with NIST standards and controls.
  • Experienced with creating and maintaining disaster recovery/contingency procedures and documentation.

  • Route manipulation
  • VRF implementation and design
  • VSS and VPC technologies
  • MPLS WAN infrastructure
  • GetVPN, DMVPN, and IPsec Tunnel design
  • Enterprise QOS
  • IPv4 and IPv6 addressing
  • Scripting and Network Automation (Python, VBscript, Powershell)
