Applies experience and advanced technical knowledge applicable in applying the theoretical foundations of computer science, including computer system architecture and system hardware and software organization, the representation and transformations of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformation and specialized knowledge of the design characteristics, limitations, and potential applications of systems having the ability to transform information, and of broad areas of applications of computing which have common structures, processes, and techniques. Integrates, configures, and installs computer operating systems and software applications on a wide variety of personal computers. Analyzes security requirements, solutions and technical problems for a variety of computer systems in accordance with National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) publications and Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA). Ensures vulnerability assessments and risk analysis and testing of security solutions. Serves as a focal point of contact to identify and resolve hardware/software/LAN technical problems and to implement or recommend appropriate corrective action.

Participates in interdisciplinary team of technical experts to develop, test, evaluate, acquire, and/or implement systems that impact aviation medicine. Coordinates and provides technical guidance to managers and sponsors. Identifies existing or potential problems, defines requirements, proposes alternatives, and coordinates solutions with sponsors. Provides periodic status reports to the supervisor. Identifies existing/potential problems which may impact on established or proposed plans. Collaborates with government IT representatives to resolve IT issues and maintain authorized research computers and servers.

Identifies alternatives and provides recommendations. Conducts administrative or on-site comprehensive reviews of existing or proposed projects. Verifies cost estimates (with managers throughout the FAA), identifies and resolves questionable aspects of proposals or procedures. Develops or reviews funding documents, schedules and milestones. Represents the organizational unit in his/her field of expertise at various seminar, committee, user group panel, and conference meetings.

Occasional travel - The job may require travel from time- to-time, but not on a regular basis. The travel may be for training or other work-related duties.

BASIC REQUIREMENT: Bachelor's degree in computer science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.

Evaluation of Education: Applicants should have sufficient knowledge to understand the fundamental concepts and techniques of computer science. Courses designed to provide an introduction to computer science techniques and methodologies, to problems of system design, and other specialized fields are acceptable. Courses or experience in teaching elementary, business, or shop mathematics are not acceptable.

IN ADDITION TO THE BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT LISTED ABOVE: To qualify at the FV-I (FG/GS 13) level, you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the FV-H (FG/GS 10 - 12) level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE may include but is not limited to: experience initiating protective or corrective operations if system security problems are identified; experience with software design and development of complex automation systems; performing software maintenance and developing and maintaining computer software applications; and/or developing, executing and documenting test procedures on software systems.
