The incumbent in this position will manage a caseload of patients with tuberculosis infection or disease. This position will also be responsible for coordinating services for the Refugee Health Program. The incumbent is responsible for providing technical and professional information and advice: counseling and treatment for patients and their families. The incumbent is under the direct supervision of Senior Community Health Nurse Supervisor. A valid driver’s license is required.

Processes reports sent to the Marion County Health Department Tuberculosis Program. Investigates all reports of clients infected with Tuberculosis and contacts of those clients. Interviews and counsels clients on TB disease, precautions against spread, and treatment. Advises on care and management of illness and refers patients with abnormal findings to DOH TB Program physician. Monitors the patient’s progress during treatment, notes any changes in health status and consulting with TB physician when changes are noted. Arranges for chest x-rays and lab tests as needed. Keeps daily inventory of all TB medications and coordinates client medication with TB DOT staff. Collaborates with infection control program in the prison, jail and hospitals for appropriate follow-up and treatment of TB patients and contacts. Completes Report of Verified Case of Tuberculosis for State TB program and completes other reports required for program. Documents all actions.

Works in immunization clinic and on outreach or Mobile Health Unit (which may occur before, during, or after work hours,) activities providing children and adults with immunizations in accordance with the Standards of Childhood and Adult Immunization Practices, ACIP, and MCHD policies. Reviews client’s history to determine the accuracy and safety of the immunizations scheduled to be administered. Assures timely entry of immunization data into the FLSHOTS and the Health Management System (HMS). Educates the client regarding potential adverse reactions, provides required VIS and accurately completing required forms and data entry, to include if requested, religious exemptions.

Investigate reports of clients infected with communicable disease and contacts of those clients. Interviews clients to obtain required information for preparation of EPI reports and protect the community. Counsels and instructs clients on measures to prevent further spread of the disease. Will provide information to clients on a walk-in basis and will return telephone requests for information in a timely manner.

Coordinates the Marion County Health Department Refugee Health Program by arranging post-arrival health screenings within 90 days of arrival and immunizations to new arrivals within eight months of arrival. This position assures all communicable disease screenings are done. Assists with billing requirements to ensure correct state reimbursement through Refugee Health Program funds.

When directed by supervisor, will provide services as necessary, including but not limited to, providing counseling in accordance with MCHD protocols to clients having contact with a potentially rabid animal, and administering immunizations to adults and children.

Prepares specimen collection kits as required for client’s disease and performs serological testing as indicated.

Performs other related duties, including, but not limited to, working where assigned at the time of a disaster, keeping abreast of information pertinent to the program and performing miscellaneous duties to meet the department’s daily needs.

  • Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency.
