Child Development Specialist I

POSITION INFORMATION: Responsible for providing individual and family services to increase parenting skills and develop potential for children with developmental disabilities. Assesses the child's development, deficiencies, goals, and develops and implements health prevention programs for parents and children.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

* Discusses the child's behavior, cognitive levels, and where the child stands in relation to his/her age group with State Health Department, health care providers, other agencies, parents and care givers. May refer parents and care giver to social service agencies for additional services.

* Assesses the child's parents or care giver to evaluate their ability to carry out the therapy plan. Provides counseling and emotional support to the parents or care giver.

* Participates in planning and implementing parent education and child development programs designed to work on the child's developmental issues to include but not limited to social, motor skills, self-help, cognitive, language skills, exercise and activities.

* Conducts group or individual workshops to educate parents in the area of child development through materials and curricula developed for this purpose.

* Assists in the selection, preparation, and distribution of materials on child development.

* Maintains confidential records and prepares reports on the child's development and progress.

* May supervise staff to include training, assigning work, and evaluating performance. Discusses with management recommendations for merit increases, discipline and/or termination of employees.

* Collaborates with other community or state agencies to promote the health, development, and behavioral well-being of children and their families or care givers.

* May recruit clients for child development programs through community organizations, i.e., health clinics, hospitals, child care centers, and pediatricians.

* Performs other duties as assigned to successfully fulfill the functions of the position.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Master's Degree in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, Developmental Psychology, Family Relations or related field.

Equivalency: Will accept a Bachelor's Degree in one of the fields listed and 24 months experience in lieu of the Master's Degree.

Certification/Licenses: Child and Parenting Specialist (CCPS). If no certification, must apply and obtain certification within 6 months of hire date.

Skills/Abilities:

* Knowledge of assessment and treatment of child behavioral and development disabilities.

* Knowledge of challenges facing children with development disabilities and their families need for training and emotional support.

* Knowledge of psychological principles and theories pertaining to children.

* Ability to effectively communicate information verbally and in writing.

* Ability to listen and understand information.

* Ability to analyze information and evaluate results and discuss with supervisor.

* Ability to remain calm when faced with difficult situations.

* Ability to work as a team player.
