Description

The City of Norfolk Department of Human Services is seeking a Family Services Worker I for its Homeless Action and Response Team (HART). HART's mission is to develop processes, community partnerships, and strategies to help end homelessness in the City of Norfolk. The Family Services Worker I position works independently with individuals and families that are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless.

DEPARTMENT HIRING SALARY: $37,337.00

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

* Provides services to families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

* Completes intake assessments on homeless and at risk families to determine their service needs.

* Works with local shelter providers to facilitate shelter placement for families who are homeless and in need of emergency shelter.

* Connects families to community resources necessary to address identified needs.\

* Assists families with accessing mainstream benefits (i.e. SNAP, TANF, and Public Housing).

* Prepares reports and documentation of services.

* Develops individual case plans with families to help identify strengths and needs of the family.

* Uses case plans to help guide the family in helping to end a homeless episode and remain stably housed.

* Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.

* Counsels and provides services to individuals and families by focusing on preserving families and preventing homelessness.

* Works collaboratively in a fast paced, crisis driven, team environment.

* Demonstrates ability to make sound decisions.

Education/Experience

Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a Human Services field OR

Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in any field AND minimum of two years of appropriate and related experience in a Human Services area. (Section 22VAC40-670-20 of the Administrative Code of Virginia).

Possession of a BSW or MSW degree and a Commonwealth of Virginia Social Worker license are desirable.

No experience required; One (1) year of case management with families experiencing homelessness or at-risk of homelessness, and assessment experience servicing the homeless population preferred.

* Requires a valid driver's license.

* Must have favorable background check results (including criminal, driving and Central Registry) along with negative drug screening results.
