The Newport Working Cities Collaborative implements the grant awarded by the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. Residents, public, private and nonprofit leaders collaborate for systems change to decrease the poverty level in the City of Newport. The VISTA will learn about policies that pose barriers to Newport residents in acquiring a sustainable wage, while still being able to maintain certain benefits that impact ones' quality of life. By compiling research on local and state regulations regarding income eligibility and public assistance benefits, the VISTA members' research will inform relevant policy recommendations. This information will be utilized by the Working Cities Advisory Board and working groups to determine which systemic issues should be prioritized through the project. Spanish speaking is preferred but not required. This is a great opportunity to collaborate with residents, community groups, nonprofits, the City, Public Schools, and Public Housing. Newport is a beautiful City to live and work in, but has extreme wealth disparity as evidenced by pockets of the City that suffer from intergenerational poverty, and which are physically cut off from the rest of the City. Apply now for the opportunity to join a winning team of collaborators.
