The Newport Working Cities Collaborative implements the grant awarded by the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. Residents, public, private and nonprofit leaders collaborate for systems change to decrease the poverty level in the City of Newport. We are specifically focused on the North End community.VISTA members will be based at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County, the backbone agency for the Working Cities grant.The successful candidate will be able to properly understand the policies in Newport that are posing barriers to residents in acquiring a sustainable wage, a VISTA member would be assigned to compile local and state systems/regulations that currently exist. This includes, as an example, the maximum income an individual can earn before losing a child care subsidy, what counts as income, how long it takes to lose that subsidy once the income level is exceeded. The VISTA member may also compile relevant state policy updates. This information will be utilized by the Working Cities Advisory Board and working groups to determine which systemic issues may be addressed through the project.Spanish speaking is preferred but not required. You will be collaborating with residents, community groups, nonprofits, the City, Public Schools, and Public Housing. This is an evolutionary process, researched based, to decrease poverty in cities where economic and population decline have been an issue for decades. You will receive professional development based on your goals. You will be a part of history with a lasting sustainable impact. Newport is a beautiful City to live and work, but with the extreme wealth is multiple generations of poverty in pockets of the City which are cut off physically from the rest of the City.
