Senior Program Associate, Center On Youth Justice

Vera's Center on Youth Justice (CYJ) seeks a passionate and motivated Senior Program Associate to work on our Restoring Promise initiative: an exciting project re-imagining the care and custody of young adults in jail and prison. This project involves working directly with state Department of Corrections (DOC) agencies across the country and in partnership with incarcerated people, families of young adults who have been/ are incarcerated, and front line staff working in facilities to develop and implement reforms.

Interest in social justice, commitment to racial equity, and demonstrated knowledge of the juvenile/ criminal justice system and issues are essential. Vera highly values experience with communities impacted by the justice system – personal or family involvement is considered an asset.

* Six to ten years of relevant experience;

* Law degree or graduate degree in social work, political science, criminal justice, public policy, or other related field preferred or significant professional experience;

* Willingness to travel outside of New York City frequently;

* Ability to travel internationally;

* Knowledge of criminal justice, specifically prison and jail systems, policy development, government, and social justice for underserved populations;

* Passion for working on prison reform;

* Experience navigating power dynamics and working with high-level government partners preferred;

* Strong writing, presentation, and facilitation skills;

* Experience translating concepts for multiple audiences;

* Project management experience with the ability to manage work on multiple projects effectively, meet deadlines, and stay within budget;

* Strong interpersonal and communications skills;

* Experience and comfort with social science and/or policy research;

* Ability to work independently;

* Ability to successfully balance travel responsibilities with office-based responsibilities;

* Ability to balance roles on a team: leading but also serving as a member of work teams.

* Candidates who possess the following qualifications are strongly preferred:

* Experience with mixed methods and applied research – data analysis using statistical software such as SPSS or STATA and qualitative survey and interview development and administration;

* Data management skills;

* Bilingual English/ Spanish.
