The Director of Public Policy will support the execution of strategies designed to advance HCZ’s field building and federal policy goals. The Director’s responsibilities include the development and deployment of federal advocacy strategies to advance place-based work nationwide. Reporting to HCZ’s Managing Director of Public Policy and External Engagement, this individual will collaborate with HCZ’s External Engagement team to support national field building efforts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and advance HCZ’s policy agenda in partnership with MD of Public Policy and External Engagement
  • Support targeted advocacy efforts to support place-based work with national partners
  • Prepare timely policy memoranda, reports and letters
  • Present research and provide legislator education related to HCZ’s work and cradle-to-career initiatives nationwide
  • Cultivate strategic relationships and partnerships to further the HCZ’s strategic objectives
  • Coordinate with HCZ’s Replication and Practitioners Institute teams to ensure alignment across External Engagement portfolio
  • Manage the Assistant Director of Policy to support HCZ’s state and local policy and advocacy priorities and align our place-based strategy with our national strategy

Qualification, Skills and Knowledge Requirements

  • A commitment to the mission and values of HCZ
  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced policy degree preferred
  • 5+ years of experience in legislative policy and advocacy
  • Working knowledge of place-based education strategy and urban policy
  • Excellent public speaking and strategic communication skills
  • Knowledge of relationship management best practices
  • Experience building and maintaining productive partnerships with diverse stakeholders
  • Willingness and ability for occasional domestic travel
