Position Summary:

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Organ Donor Advocate.

In this role, the successful candidate The Living Donor Advocate represents, advises, protects and promotes the interests of the living donor, respects their decision regarding donation, and ensures the decision is informed and free from coercion. Provides educational sessions to clinical and administrative areas to advance and maximize both deceased and living organ donation throughout the NYULMC hospital system.

Job Responsibilities:

* Successfully completes initial IDA competency training, as well as ongoing continuing education specific to living donation, transplantation, and medical ethics. Acquires and maintains current knowledge and competence to fulfill responsibilities. Maintains awareness of current evidence based practice and utilizes findings from current nursing literature in deceased organ donation and living donation. Serves as a support and resource for other nursing staff and students regarding both deceased organ and living donation.

* Engages in self-assessment and participates in activities to promote own professional growth and development. Assesses and recognizes personal learning needs to enhance performance with guidance from Nursing Leadership. Learns and uses new information, skills and knowledge in an effort to improve care and services. Shares knowledge and participates in peer review process by providing information as requested.

* Demonstrates awareness of the mission, philosophy, standards, goals and objectives of the NYU Langone Medical Center, Departments of Nursing, clinical department and strategic area. Participates in unit/service based meetings. Recognizes importance of cost effective patient care. Reports unexpected events and outcomes to senior staff/leadership in a timely manner. Delivers patient care in accordance with professional nursing standards. Demonstrates awareness of JC, DOH, CMS, and CARF standards pertinent to unit. Communicates effectively with patients families, visitors and all members of the interdisciplinary team. Delegates activities effectively and appropriately to the ancillary staff.

* Actively participates as a member of the Organ Donor Council.

* Maintains confidentiality of patient information.

* Partners with LiveOnNY to facilitate and optimize the organ donation process at NYULMC. Assists LiveOnNY personnel with gaining access to medical records of potential organ donors, and monitors compliance with federal and state organ donor mandates. Works with unit staff to identify any potential organ donors within the hospital and makes appropriate referrals to LiveOnNY as needed.

* Communicates any issues/concerns raised during the living donor interactions with the potential donor directly to the appropriate member of the multidisciplinary team. Documents an assessment in the EMR of each donor evaluated, including whether the potential living donor has received information on the following areas: Informed consent process; Evaluation process; surgical procedure; Medical risks; psychosocial risks; Follow-up requirements; and the benefit and need for participating in follow-up. Donors are required to follow-up with the transplant center at 6 months, 1 year and 2 years.

* Meets with the living donor in a one-to-one consultation after they have been medically evaluated and cleared by the transplant physicians, and have had an in-depth psychosocial evaluation by the transplant social worker. Ensures that the donor understands the decision they are making, that all intellectual and emotional factors have been discussed, that the donor understands the potential risks and benefits related to their personal situation, and that they are making a voluntary decision without undue pressure from anyone. Refers potential donor to previous donors as appropriate and applicable.

* Educates the potential donor regarding the medical, psychosocial, and financial implications of the live donation. Explains the evaluation process, what to expect, what it means to be a donor, and that the donor may opt out at any time of the process.

* Acts as an independent advocate for the living donor throughout the continuum of care, representing and promoting their interests, respecting their decision and ensures that its informed and free from coercion. Advices, supports and safeguards the rights and the autonomy of the living donor throughout the donor evaluation, donation and discharge phases of donation.

Minimum Qualifications:

To qualify you must have a Bachelors degree in Nursing or Social Work Required. NYS RN or SW license and registration required. Minimum of 2 years experience in transplant, organ donation or related field.

Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
