Reporting to the Director of Major Gifts, the Individual Giving Officer is responsible for raising and stewarding individual philanthropy that is critical to the mission, growth and innovative work of HCZ. The Officer will manage a portfolio of individual donors and prospects at the four, five and six-figure levels; create systems and processes to grow our portfolio of annual donors; and implement, manage and analyze giving strategies to broaden our donor base. The successful applicant will have a strong understanding of the philanthropic landscape in New York City and be a self-motivated frontline fundraiser.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage and grow a targeted portfolio of individual funders with annual and multi-year goals toward increased revenue—documenting contacts, solicitations, and meetings in Raiser’s Edge
  • In partnership with Development leadership, design tactics and long-term engagement strategies to deepen donor commitment, increase giving and broaden the donor base
  • Develop and execute a strategy to cultivate, steward and systematically increase year-over-year revenue from our annual giving portfolio ($2M revenue line with extensive opportunity for growth)
  • Execute the annual appeal process, including mailed and digital appeals
  • Work closely with the Director of Major Gifts to implement systems, utilizing the skillsets of our research and database managers, that will create efficiencies for individual giving and the team overall
  • Develop reports that track year-to-date progress in areas such as leadership giving, constituency giving, rates of participation, number of gifts, average gift size and year over year variances by constituencies. Analyze trends and identify areas of growth.
  • Create strategic correspondence, including solicitations, proposals, appeals and stewardship materials, to engage donors and prospects
  • Work closely with Director of Major Gifts to manage Planned Giving program
  • Collaborate with leadership to develop meaningful opportunities for engagement, with the aim of increased giving for individual donors
  • Other projects and responsibilities as assigned

Qualification, Skill and Knowledge Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum of four years experience in fundraising, including at least two years of frontline fundraising experience
  • Proven track record of raising funds from individuals
  • Experience in donor cultivation and solicitation as well as annual giving
  • Demonstrated commitment to accountability, measuring outcomes and a results-oriented culture
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Raiser’s Edge, or similar database
  • Familiarity with donor tracking systems
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people
  • Sound judgment, professionalism, a positive attitude and a sense of humor
  • Resourcefulness, creativity and strong problem-solving skills
  • Understanding of the challenges facing underserved communities of color
