  • Under supervision, performs miscellaneous clerical, administrative, research or other work related to the operation of a College or other unit where such work is required on a part-time basis or for a period of limited duration.

  • Maximum tenure for any employee in this hourly position is 1040 hours per year.
  • Performs routine clerical work; may answer and attend to telephone calls; maintain records,
  • perate office machines (such as copier), sort and distribute mail, issue keys and identity cards,

act as messenger, and perform related tasks as required.

  • Types letters, memoranda, charts, and similar materials.
  • Acts as cashier.
  • Assists in statistical or research activities. May collect and compile data, code data for computer entry, perform data entry, and run computer reports.
  • Performs clerical library work, such as sorting and shelving books, performing data entry into library systems, or binding books and periodicals.
  • Assists in instructional programs, including tutoring and assisting students in areas such as reading and mathematics. May assist in speech and hearing therapy, provide musical accompaniment, and/or distribute and collect physical education equipment.
  • Enters and maintains departmental records such as inventory control records, rosters, directories, and schedules.
  • May operate computers, computer software, and other electronic equipment in performing assigned tasks.


College Assistant




The CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies (SLU) is the 25th and newest unit of the City University of New York. The School is dedicated to public service and social justice and offers undergraduate and graduate certificate and degree programs in labor relations, public policy, public administration, health care administration, community studies, community leaders, labor studies and urban studies. These programs are designed to meet the needs of working adults as well as traditional-age college students who seek to learn more about the challenges confronting poor and working-class populations in the workplace and in the community. Its faculty includes distinguished scholars in the social sciences as well as expert practitioners in government, labor, and public service. Through SLU's Murphy Institute, the School 1) collaborates with other units of CUNY to offer a range of college-credit programs designed to provide workers with the academic and technical skills they need for professional advancement, and 2) provides educational and research services to the labor movement and the broader community.

The Institute seeks a College Assistant to provide administrative support for the Worker Education Program at Queens College. Primary responsibilities are to:

  • Support recruitment, academic advising and writing center activities at QC site.
  • Assist in preparation for Open House, sessions, and workshops.
  • Assist with student communications via mailings, e-blasts and social media.
  • Follow-up with potential applicants and current students.
  • Data entry and routine database maintenance.
  • Assist with updating program web page.
  • Generate reports and labels using MS Access and Excel.
  • Assist with answering the phone, routing calls and recording messages.
  • Keep a supply inventory and order supplies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Note: Ability to work a flexible schedule with evenings and some weekends is required.


  • Must demonstrate sufficient skills to perform the duties of the assigned tasks.


  • Strong administrative, organizational, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of MS Office Suite .
  • Knowledge of Higher Education and previous experience working with adult learners preferred.
  • Knowledge of student services preferred.
  • Previous experience working with PeopleSoft a plus.


$16.00 per hour
