Summary of position:

Senior Scientist in the area of Materials characterization. A Master's degree or PhD in Materials Science, Polymer Physics, or a related discipline is desired along with extensive experience in X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Rheology. Should also have a working experience in thermal analysis methods such as Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA), Thermal Grivimetric Analysis (TGA) and/or Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The Senior Scientist will be responsible for developing material characterization methods and for solving complex chemical and material problems for internal K-C customers across the globe.

Essential functions:

* Apply material science expertise to tackle a variety of customer problems involving, new materials, new products, process problems, failure analysis, customer complaints, and intellectual property.

* Develop new material science methods to evaluate complex polymer structures.

* Provide project mentorship and/or work direction to junior team members on immediate projects, as well as consultation on other Material Science projects within other KC teams.

* Participate in interdisciplinary and cross functional project teams to obtain practical solutions for our internal customers.

* Provide protection to internally developed methodologies and technologies using patents and trade secrets.

* Lead the efforts along with material science colleagues and management to identify growth areas for material science capabilities and technologies to meet the current and future needs of the corporation. Recommend and support instrumentation and associated purchases as an element of implementing these strategies.

* Effectively communicate project plans and results to customers.

* Be able to role model "work safely" in a lab environment, aligning with all rules and regulations.

Minimum requirements:

Education required:

A Master's degree or PhD in Material Science or polymer physics from an accredited college or university.


A minimum of 5 years industrial lab experience with XRD and rheology and related techniques.

Preferred Experience/Qualifications:

* A demonstrated ability to identify and solve complex problems which require significant technical expertise, team leadership, collaboration with other scientific disciplines and BU's, as well as identification and management of external partnerships.

* A proven ability to collaborate and influence in a setting across multiple technical groups and BU functions such as R&E, product safety, marketing, and regulatory.

* A track record of documenting results in internal publications, using external publications to foster KC goals, and protecting intellectual property.

* Experience with analysis tools and programs for statistical analysis and design of experiments.


* Strong ability to function as a mentor for junior scientists, acting as a role model in the application of the scientific method to tackle problems of importance for KC.

* Proven continuous personal improvement in scientific and leadership skills thru attending classes, conferences, and other forms of training.

* Willingness to work in a dynamic environment and able to adapt to frequent changes in priorities and projects.

Scope of position:

Works as a senior scientist within the AXIS Analytical team. Has responsibility to lead multi-disciplinary analytical projects contributing solutions utilizing expertise in Material Science, X-ray, Rheology and Thermo-mechanical analyses. Effectively communicates project plans and results to key customers and partners. Provides protection of technologies and products through the appropriate use of intellectual assets such as patents and trade secrets. Explores and advances new technology and capabilities in analytical science for the benefit of Kimberly-Clark.
