STEM Prep Academy Vision:
Graduates of STEM Prep will become persistent and steadfast problem-solvers, active leaders in the community, and highly engaged and empathetic citizens of the world.  By cultivating a community of learning and academic excellence, STEM Prep will bolster the number of underrepresented students who graduate from the most competitive postsecondary programs and universities in the country and lead the discoveries and innovations of the future.

What you need to know about STEM:
STEM Preparatory Academy is a public charter school that serves over one thousand students in grades 5-12. The STEM Prep student body is made up of a unique, highly diverse population from Southeast Nashville. We have one of the highest percentage of Hispanic and Latino students in the state and serve nearly half of the highest-poverty neighborhoods in Nashville. Roughly 80% of STEM Prep students have been classified as English Learners during their academic career.

STEM Prep is among the highest performing public middle schools in Tennessee. STEM has been recognized as a Reward School by the state of Tennessee for performing in the top 5% of schools in the state for progress and growth. Since our inception, students have consistently outperformed their peers in both the district and state in every subject area and 100% of our graduating seniors were accepted into college.

  • · Internalize and uphold all STEM Prep systems and procedures with fidelity.
    · Be an active member of your grade level team.
    · Initiate a partnership with the guardians of each student in your advisory.
    · Actively participate in all professional development sessions, offering constructive comments and feedback.

  • By the first quarter, you will…
  • · Execute school-wide and classroom specific procedures such that your classroom operates smoothly and with a sense of urgency via the trainings provided by the book “Teach Like a Champion”.
    · Craft directions that are specific, concrete, sequential, and observable such that all students immediately respond without interrupting the flow of instruction.
    · Create and internalize unit plans, daily lesson plans, and assessments aligned to the state assessment that allow your students to show that they are proficient and have grown at least two academic years.

  • By the second quarter, you will…
  • · Respond to student data via your daily lesson plans.
    · Consistently identify areas of growth through data analysis, noting trends by subgroup in addition to completing analyses at the individual student level.
    · See student growth on internal and external assessments as a result of your data-driven instruction.
    · Continue to uphold the first quarter goals around classroom culture and community.

  • By the third quarter, you will…
  • · Consistently define high expectations for quality work and effort.
    · Effectively support students to set high expectations for each other to persevere and produce high quality work in alignment to school culture and mission and consistently provides exemplars.
    · Take ownership of student learning and outcomes by effectively prioritizing the most important challenges impacting student achievement and working purposefully and diligently to address them.

  • By the fourth quarter, you will…
  • · Have 90% of your students achieve an average conditional growth score of 1.0 (2 years of academic growth) on the MAP test.
    · Have 95% of your English Learner students achieve an average conditional growth score of 1.2 (~2.5 years of academic growth) based on Spring MAP data.
    · Consistently make modifications of lesson materials and activities in order to meet the needs of all learners, often customizing plans for individual students.

  • Continuously throughout the year, you will…
  • · Respond and implement feedback from school leaders and colleagues so that positive transformation of your practice is immediate and sustained.
    · Collaborate with your colleagues so that relationships are positive and constructive and you’re able to positively impact the mindsets of your staff members.
    · Be punctual, meet deadlines, dress professionally, and demonstrate sound judgment in order to be a strong role model for your students.
    · Build positive relationships with ALL students that support learning and socio-emotional development while continuing to implement activities within your classroom that facilitate positive interactions.
    · Consistently use the STEM School-Wide Positive Behavior System and create a welcoming classroom environment by awarding more positive incentives than negative consequences.
  • · Use a two-way system that supports strong communication with families surrounding student learning and demonstrates an appreciation of different families’ home language, culture and values.

Required:

  • A belief that all students can, will, and want to learn
  • The discipline to self-reflect and the hunger to continuously improve as a teacher through observations, feedback, and coaching conversations.
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Current certification or ability to be certified for the 2019-2020 school year in Tennessee
  • Evidence of advancing student achievement on state assessments required if candidate has prior teaching experience. If candidate does not have prior teaching experience, evidence of achieving ambitious goals required.
  • Must be able to pass a background check

Preferred:

  • Experience with English Language Learners
  • Dual certifications and endorsements
  • Experience teaching in a high needs environment with a diverse student population
