Job Description:

Morrisville State College seeks candidates for a full time Instructional Support Assistant in Equine Racing. This is a tenure track position in the Equine Racing portion of the Equine Science Department assisting with the day-to-day management of the horses in the Equine Racing facilities, the instruction of Equine Racing program laboratories, and the supervision of the summer internship program and student employees. This position is responsible for assisting with the daily operation of the college equine program to accomplish the educational objectives of the equine racing program established by the college. This position works as a team member in the strategic planning process with other faculty and staff members that work in the Equine Racing programs, Rehabilitation program, and the Equine Science Department. Primary responsibilities include:

* Assist and supervise barn duty, include scheduling and weekend supervision

* Assist with or lead Racing program and Rehabilitation labs

* Assist with patient care working with clients and appropriate professionals, including but not limited to, veterinarians, farriers, trainers, and adjunct therapists

* Assist with organizing and scheduling the care of in-house horses and client horses in coordination with management

* Ensure that racing, medical and rehabilitation records are complete and accurate

* Ensure that racing medical and rehabilitation equipment is properly maintained and in working order

* Assist with handling, riding, trailering of horses

* Assist with maintaining an inventory of racing, medical and rehabilitation supplies

* Provide daily building opening and closing procedures, ensuring that all areas of the building are properly cleaned, resupplied and secured

* Schedule delivery and/or pickup of miscellaneous supplies

* Assist professors with classes or laboratories at the facility as needed

* Assist with oversight of student assigned barn chores. In the absence of students, ensure that barn chores are completed

* May be required to assist with setups for special functions

* Assist with daily operation of the Thoroughbred Racing and Rehabilitation barns as needed

* Support management as directed

* Available to work weekends and holidays as scheduled

Requirements:

Associate's Degree is required, Bachelor's Degree in Equine Science or related area is preferred. Work experience in the equine racing industry is preferred and experience working with a variety of horses strongly encouraged. NY Racing Association Assistant Trainer or Exercise Rider license (or ability to acquire) is required. Proper horse handling/care skills including knowledge of nutrition, care, sanitation and disease control. Ability to serve as a mentor, advisor and role model for students. Ability to work productively and cooperatively with colleagues. Ability to give clear and concise instructions. Ability to meet schedules and time lines. Self-starter that demonstrates strong initiative. Possess strong written and verbal communication skills required along with capacity to follow written and verbal instructions. Previous maintenance experience in an equine setting preferred. Must be comfortable working with and around horses and students. Knowledge of principles of marketing and advertising encouraged. Must be able to perform moderate to heavy physical labor. Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions. Bilingual or conversational work place Spanish is desirable.
