Sr Tax Analyst

Position Summary

The Senior Tax Analyst identifies opportunities and leads projects associated with complex tax research, planning, exams, special projects and tax savings initiatives. The Senior Tax Analyst also serves as a technical tax expert and is responsible for ensuring compliance with and avoiding penalties in key operational areas. Reporting organizationally to and assisting the Director of Tax, this key individual will interact routinely with TCF's various business and Finance leaders as well as leaders and others within the Payroll, Legal, Accounts Payable, and other departments.

Major Areas of Accountability

* Conduct research on tax related issues by examining tax laws, rulings, regulations, and judicial decisions affecting corporations. Communicate and document findings within the department and throughout TCF as appropriate.

* Identify, develop, vet, promote, implement and lead tax savings on a large scale or for complex and sophisticated initiatives and projects.

* Review contracts and transactions for tax implications. This could include routine operating and business agreements, sophisticated tax motivated transactions or M&A agreements. Communicate findings with the Tax Director and Business Leaders as necessary.

* Effectively manage external examinations and reviews by tax authorities, regulators and others to optimize TCF's position and avoid unexpected results. Document tax positions to comply with ASC 740 requirements.

* Lead and complete large scale and/or highly complex ad hoc analyses and special projects.

* Provide expertise and thorough research and documentation in several key areas and lead tax department efforts in those areas. Potential areas of expertise include Information Reporting and Executive Compensation.

* Maintain awareness of various legislative, judicial, and other developments, proactively bringing them to management's attention and evaluating their effect on TCF. When appropriate, lead or assist with related lobbying efforts to advocate for changes favorable to TCF.

Assist the Director of Tax with various departmental management and administrative functions including:

* Research library and subscriptions

* Departmental metrics and management reporting

* Departmental risk assessments, metrics and reporting

* Other departmental administrative matters

Minimum Qualifications



* Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or related field


* Advanced Degree in Taxation, or Juris Doctor

Work Experience/Skills:


* 10 years of experience in a combination of global accounting firms and/or large corporation tax departments OR 5 years' experience with an advanced degree

* Strong leadership ability with ability to work with all levels of personnel and management

* Experience leading and facilitating cross-departmental teams and projects to resolution

* Ability to mentor and develop team members

* Proven project management and organization skills

* Excellent written and oral communication skills

* Ability to multitask effectively

* Adaptive learner; able to grasp new concepts quickly

* A passion for details and a sense of urgency


* Financial services industry experience.

Supervisory Responsibilities

* None, but will direct the work of other team members or use other team members as staff support in some situations.
