SVP - Director , Wholesale Loan Review

Manage the commercial Loan Review function. Oversee all credit review activities to provide TCF senior management and the Board of Directors with an independent evaluation of credit quality, credit risk and emerging trends in the wholesale lending portfolios. Responsible for planning, budgeting and staffing development.

Major Areas of Accountability:

* Lead the commercial loan review process. Direct the activities of all Loan Review personnel and provide leadership to establish a culture of sound credit/risk practices, self-identification, transparency and rapid remediation.

* Remain current on regulatory, accounting and credit related guidance, focusing on consumer or commercial credit. Actively communicate with TCF's legal counsel, compliance and Enterprise Risk departments regarding credit related activities and to provide updates on Loan Review's credit review activities.

* Lead and manage Loan Review personnel which includes 1) assigning Loan Review personnel to credit review projects, 2) hiring, 3) preparing or reviewing performance evaluations, 4) team development and training, 5) all other personnel management functions.

* Work with RCS leaders, the Director of Loan Review and the retail Loan Review Functional Leader (as applicable) to develop and maintain the Loan Review annual plan, which includes participating in the risk assessment process, updating the annual plan on a periodic basis, and determining the schedule for performing function credit review activities.

* Work with audit staff on integrated assurance reviews and horizontal reviews, share resources as appropriate and continue the continued integration of Loan Review into RCS.

* Develop and monitor the annual financial budget and is responsible for control of departmental expenditures.

* Develop and maintain internal and external relationships to ensure the proper functioning of the Wholesale credit review team. Work closely with bank executives and senior management.

* Participate in credit new product development teams to maintain awareness of new product develop and provide recommendations as needed.

* Monitor trends in loan/lease portfolio performance and make credit policy recommendations, when warranted, to compensate for changes in risk. Through Loan Review activities, monitor bank-wide compliance with credit regulations as well as bank policies and procedures

* Review all Loan Review reports to ensure compliance with Loan Review report standards and accuracy of the reports prior to submission to the Director for Loan Review for approval

* Motivate, coach and guide the Wholesale Loan Review team and introduce relevant training to upskill team members

* Lead and/or participate on integrated / combined assurance (Loan Review and Internal Audits) reviews

* Lead or participate on Consumer Lending, Credit Administration and/or horizontal Wholesale / Consumer Lending Loan Reviews

* Perform or assist on special assurance, consulting or management request projects, new product/service, horizontal, acquisition due diligence and continuous assurance / monitoring reviews

Minimum Qualifications



* Bachelor's degree in Business or related field


* MBA, CFA, CPA, FRM or MS in Finance

* RMA Credit Risk Certification

Work Experience

* 15 years of experience in bank credit related responsibilities working with multiple credit products (e.g., C&I, , commercial real estate, asset-based loans, floor planning, equipment financing and leasing for commercial, 1st and 2nd mortgage for consumer)

* 7 years of credit review and/or project management experience across both consumer and commercial banking, audit, risk management, credit administration, workout, and appraisal functions

* 7 years management experience

* Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills

* Thorough knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements

* Thorough knowledge of lending principles and their application

* Proficiency with use of electronic workpaper applications and quality control / documentation of workpapers

* Knowledge and experience using Data Analytics and/or Data Visualization tools and techniques

* Thorough knowledge of regulatory and accounting requirements for ALLL, TDR Classification, Loan Modifications and Extensions

* Knowledge of ERM, Credit Risk Management (including Credit Metrics and Credit KRIs/KPIs), Covenant, Counterpart Credit, Appraisal, Concentration, Collateral, Risk Layering and Model Risk Management principles and practices

* Excellent relationship building, influencing and team building skills to foster a trusted business advisor relationship and high stature of Loan Review

* Excellent coordination and collaboration skills with other risk management and assurance groups (e.g., Compliance, Model Validation), internal audit, regulators, external auditors and other stakeholders of Loan Review

* Experience in being a member or participating in Credit Governance related Committees

* Perform supervisory functions, including but not limited to, making employment decisions regarding hiring, promoting, demoting and terminating, conducting performance appraisals and coaching and developing staff.

Preferred Work Experience / Skills

* Credit experience from multiple institutions, including a regional or larger bank

* Managerial experience in the credit review environment, including interaction with Sr. Management

* Regulatory experience from the OCC or Federal Reserve Bank as a bank examiner for credit products

* RMA Credit Risk Certification

* Non-voting membership credit governance meetings
