Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner - Orthopedics

Hennepin Healthcare has a current opening for a full-time Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner within the Orthopedics department. This position will evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with diseases and adverse health conditions. Will also provide preventive care services and coordinate the care of population served.

This position will work Monday - Friday days in both the clinic and in surgery. Will work alongside Dr. Nancy Luger who is a Sports/Trauma Surgeon in the Orthopedic department with an established practice. The APP runs a side by side clinic with Dr. Luger - seeing post-operative patients as well as new patients with sports injuries and non-operative trauma and general orthopedic patients. Will also assist in the operating room.

* Provide direct primary and acute care services to adult and pediatric patients as part of the primary care interdisciplinary team in the ambulatory department

* Perform initial and on-going assessment of patients' medical, physical and psychosocial status

* Obtain and evaluate health and medical history; perform physical exam, conduct preventive screening procedures based on age and history; Identify medical and health risks

* Complete accurate and timely documentation of observations, interventions, plan of care, referrals and follow-up

* Formulate appropriate differential diagnosis based on history, and physical examination

* Identify needs of the individual, family or community and develop a plan of care and/ or education plan

* Order, conduct, and interpret diagnostic tests, therapeutic treatments; may prescribe, administer and dispense therapeutic devices and legend drugs

* Make appropriate referrals to other health professionals and community agencies

* Reassess and modify the plan as necessary to achieve medical and health goals

* Contribute to on-going medical and nursing staff teaching programs

* Support new and existing programs which expand the organization's role in the community

* Develop a patient education plan relevant to the condition and patient/family needs

* Participate in performance improvement activities

* Adhere to productivity standards established by the organization


Minimum Qualifications:

* Master's degree in Nursing or Physician Assistant (PA) studies from an accredited program

* Current licensure to practice as a Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or PA issued by the State of Minnesota

* Family NP certification required for NP candidates

* Knowledge of electronic medical documentation system/software

* Prefer at least one year in a hospital clinic or inpatient setting; experience in surgery a plus
