The School of Freshwater Sciences (SFS) at UWM is the only graduate school in the nation dedicated solely to the study of freshwater issues. Its interdisciplinary research and education programs link science with action, and are integrated across four major areas: freshwater system dynamics; human and ecosystem health; freshwater technology; and freshwater economics, policy, and management. It is the school's goal to be recognized world-wide as the source of expert knowledge on water issues and a catalyst for great ideas that change how people think about and manage water resources.

The School of Freshwater Sciences is housed at UWM's Harbor Campus at 600 E. Greenfield Avenue, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Job Summary

This position provides critical support for all SFS facilities operations, including building and marine activities. This position requires working in adverse conditions, including a moving deck in rough seas, and performing work in restricted spaces, and exposed elevated locations.

Minimum Qualifications

High School degree

A minimum of one year experience with Great Lakes research vessel operation and maintenance

Training and experience in mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and navigational systems used on board research vessels

SCUBA diving certification

Ability to interact with all levels of management from School leadership to students

Preferred Qualifications

Several consecutive years of recent experience with research vessel systems operations, including repair, and maintenance of onboard equipment both in port and at sea

Several consecutive years of recent experience with the operations of facilities maintenance vehicles, including fork lifts, fixed cranes, skidsteer loaders, and crane trucks

Several consecutive years of recent experience with small research vessels (16-25 feet-outboard powered), including operation, trailering, launch and recovery, and maintenance of mechanical and electrical systems

Working knowledge of Great Lakes navigation rules and USCG safety rules as they apply to research vessels

Several consecutive years of recent experience as a relief captain on a research vessel with demonstrated knowledge of navigation and station keeping

Demonstrated experience with deployment and recovery of scientific research equipment for Great Lakes research

Experience working on a moving vessel in rough seas, working in restricted mechanical spaces and exposed, elevated locations
