Lankenau Medical Center Level ll Trauma Center is a 331-bed non-profit teaching hospital located on a 93-acre suburban campus just outside of Philadelphia, PA. Lankenau Medical Center is one of four acute care hospitals in our health system, which also includes a hospital for rehabilitative medicine, a treatment center for drug and alcohol recovery, a home care network providing home health services, and a freestanding biomedical research center. Lankenau Medical Center serves as the hub for the Lankenau Heart Institute, the health system's comprehensive cardiovascular medicine and surgical program.
The Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) is a 16-bed critical care unit on 2-Pavilion of the Lankenau Heart Institute at Lankenau Medical Center of Main Line Health. Our cardiothoracic surgery department combines cutting-edge techniques with a multidisciplinary team approach, with our cardiothoracic surgeons, Intensivists, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and exceptional nursing staff collaborating to provide unparalleled patient care.
The cardiothoracic surgery department offers a full spectrum of cardiovascular surgical services, including groundbreaking applications of robotic-assisted, minimally invasive, catheter-based, hybrid, and conventional surgical techniques. Patients admitted to our unit may have one or more of the following admitting diagnoses: coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, acute respiratory distress syndrome, multisystem failure, cardiomyopathy, aortic insufficiency, aortic stenosis, mitral stenosis, mitral regurgitation, septal defect, endocarditis, sepsis, acute decompensated heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and/or myocardial infarction with cardiogenic shock. Our CT team also treats patients needing repair of aortic aneurysms (ascending aortic, aortic root, arch, descending aortic, and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms), repair of aortic dissections (Type A and Type B), and aortic root reconstruction.
Our nurses, being intricate members of this team, are trained to care for patients recovering from and preparing for a wide range of cardiothoracic surgeries, as well as multiple implantable devices. Our extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) program has continued to grow each year. This increase in volume has precipitated a nurse driven collaboration to develop a nurse managed ECMO program. Our nursing staff has attended specialized training with ongoing competency demonstration for ECMO certification.
