Purpose and Scope

Executes the safety and occupational health components of personnel, materials, equipment, and working environments. The position is responsible for ensuring compliance and notifications to AHERA plans. The position develops and provides safety awareness programs such as, but not limited to Confined Spaces, Personal Protective Equipment, and Accident Prevention.

Essential Job FunctionsResponsible for inspecting all facilities within the District for safety compliance.Coordinates, schedules, and directs OSHA and AHERA training and record keeping for the Facilities Management Department.Acts as the Memphis City School's Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) Management Planner.Responsible for sampling clearances, air monitoring, and site-specific hazard evaluations for the District.Responsible for repairs, inventory, selection of proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and fit-testing of all respirators for all maintenance employees.Responsible for scheduling employee physical examinations, air monitoring, air clearances and some bulk sampling.Conducts training in areas governed by OSHA, DOT, EPA, and other governing agencies; creating and updating safety awareness training materials for maintenance and custodial employees.Oversees and maintains various contracts for, but not limited to Elevator Service, Fire Extinguishers, and Chemical Water Treatment.Responsible for creating, updating and maintaining Microsoft Access databases.Assists in the development of Physical Needs Assessments.Responsible for staying abreast of regulatory changes and guidelines related to safety and compliance for the Facilities Department.Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in a related area or equivalent, plus 2 years of experience in Safety Compliance or Risk Management for a total education/experience of 6 years.

Degree Equivalency Formula:

Bachelor's Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.

Master's Degree= 2 years plus required years of experience. Where Master's degrees are required, years for Bachelor's Degrees must be included.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

* Thorough knowledge of EPA and/or DOT rules and regulations is preferred

* Skills and experience in providing effective oral/written presentations

* Ability to plan, organize and facilitate with minimal direction

* Ability to read and interpret general correspondence, memorandums, letters, reports, and federal, state, and city regulations and laws

* Ability to recommend process and product safety features that will reduce employees' exposure to chemical, physical, and biological work hazards

Physical Requirements and Working Environment

Physical Demands: Requires sedentary work involving standing or walking for brief periods, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis; and some dexterity in operating office equipment; must be able to use hands and fingers for sign language.

Unavoidable Hazards: The position is exposed to no unusual environmental hazards.

Sensory (ADA) Requirements: The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities.
