The Position

Contra Costa County's Health Services Department is offering an excellent career opportunity for individuals interested in a Public Health Microbiologist position. The department currently has three (3) full-time vacancies at the Public Health Laboratory in Martinez, CA.

Public Health Microbiologists are responsible for performing bacteriological, parasitological, serological, and virological examinations on human, animal, food and water specimen. The incumbents will prepare specimens for analysis, make slide examinations, and perform cultural procedures which result in the identification of pathogenic bacteria such as tuberculosis or enteric organisms. The incumbents will also analyze food, milk, and water samples for pathogenic bacteria and toxic agents and perform serological tests on blood serum as an aide in the diagnosis of various diseases.

The employment list established as a result of this examination may remain in effect for six (6) months.

Typical Tasks

* Prepares specimen for analysis

* Make slide examinations and performs cultural procedure which result in the Identification of pathogenic bacteria such as tuberculosis or enteric organisms

* Analyzes food, milk and water sample for pathogenic bacteria and toxic agents Performs serological tests on blood serum as an aid in diagnosis of such diseases as syphilis and other disease which result in an elevated blood titer

* Performs tests on brain material for the identification of rabies virus

* Performs various molecular techniques for the detection of viruses and bacteria

Minimum Qualifications

License Required: Possession of a valid certificate as a Public Health Microbiologist issued by the California State Department of Health.

Other Requirements: A background investigation/fingerprint and/or physical exam may be required prior to the start of employment.

Selection Process

1. Application Filing: All applicants must apply on-line at and submit the information as indicated on the job announcement by the final filing date.

2. Application Evaluation: Depending on the number of applications received, an Application Evaluation Board may be convened to evaluate and select the best-qualified candidates for invitation to the next phase of the examination.

3. Training and Experience Evaluation: Consists of an evaluation of each candidate's relevant education, training and/or experience as presented on the application and supplemental questionnaire (Weighted 100%).

The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices. As part of the application process, an applicant may be required to complete a Conviction History form. The Conviction History form should only be submitted when requested.
