HR Specialist - Marinette Mill

Marinette, WI

Job Summary:

To provide union (non-exempt) and salaried (exempt) employee counseling and system design regarding human resource practices consistent with site and/or corporate policies.


* Hourly and salaried employees of the Marinette Mill, site leadership, USW Local leadership, sector leadership, and outside organizations/agencies.

* Interact regarding labor and employee relations, hiring, benefits, payroll and compensation, recognition, performance management, site policies and practices, and training.


* Reports to the HR Manager.

* Supports in matters of payroll, compensation, benefits, policies/procedures, attendance, disciplinary procedures, and relocation.

* Responsible for HRIS Systems (Workday), Payroll (SAP), Time-keeping and attendance system, etc


* Interact with all employees to provide professional information in the areas of compensation, benefits, payroll, attendance and timekeeping, Work System processes and procedures, and site standards.

* Ensure timely and accurate payroll processing in SAP including a timely and thorough review of union employees' timekeeping records in accordance with Marinette policies and procedures and the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

* Counsel with site leadership on employee issues involving disciplinary processes, policy and procedures, compensation, attendance and any other areas included in the Marinette Collective Bargaining Agreement.

* Responsible for proper handling of grievances. Responsible for defining and maintaining a union/management relationship.

* Perform special projects as required (i.e. corporate reporting–EEO/AAP, staffing needs, wage surveys, community relations, etc.).

* Ensure skill level requirements are maintained & respond to mill career advancement issues.

* Maintain accurate and timely records of Workforce Planning/Staffing moves and openings.

* Facilitate & lead the High Performance Work System certification process to promote higher skill development.

* Coach and counsel union employees on their career paths.

* Develops infrastructure to support training needs for the facility from curriculum development to training record-keeping and provides leadership to employees in their career development.

* Manage the Mill's employee selection and placement functions.

* Create and implement plans which ensure that the mill achieves its goals for affirmative action in employment.

* Ensure the recruitment, interviewing, and hiring processes of union production/maintenance team members and salaried employees meet all guidelines and provide the Marinette Mill with a diversified, qualified workforce capable of working within the Site's organization philosophies and principles. This also includes maintaining, reviewing, and making improvements when necessary to orientation processes.

* Manage administration and coordination of FMLA/Disability/LOA processes in coordination with site OHN and HR Team Leader.

* Champion and actively participate in the Employee Assistance Program/Wellness Committee for the mill (i.e. education and employee relations).

* Communicate in a way that is timely, yet prompt; complete, yet concise; candid, yet accurate; and clear, yet responsive.

* Maintain organized records in SharePoint and EtQ (Quality Documentation) system.

* Contribute to an environment in which all team members are respected regardless of their individual differences and are motivated to improve both their individual and team contributions to achieve desired business results.

* Stay in sync with the standards and requirements of the facility.

* EHS Management System.

* Identify all aspects and hazards in areas of accountability and ensure they are managed to acceptable levels of risk.

* Drive the United Way program for mill.

* Champion the Best Place to Work A3 including setting and meeting objectives and the promotion and analysis of Input to Action Surveys.


* Bachelor degree or equivalent and 3-5 years of related business experience.

* Preferred candidates will possess union experience in an industrial environment and have successful experience running Workday/HRIS Systems.

* Position requires a thorough knowledge of all company benefits, policies and procedures pertaining to the entire realm of compensation, employment and Human Resource matters.

* Should be deeply adaptable/flexible so as to support and function in a 24/7 team environment and possess a high level of skills in interpersonal relationships and leadership.

* Ability to deal with diverse and sensitive interactions, as well as to effectively prioritize multiple responsibilities. Some overnight travel may be required.

* You will have a high level of self-management capability and motivation to continually improve systems/processes, culture, Human Resources capability, and organizational effectiveness.

* You will possess ability to take care of highly confidential information and utilize proper discernment in dissemination, disposition, and communication.

* You will understand and operate within government regulations and laws including ADA, FMLA, EEO, ADEA, FLSA and other areas of legal importance
