Job Description

This is a senior registered professional nurse position requiring advanced clinical decision making skills/judgment. This position is first, and sometimes the only, health care professional to assess and/or treat correctional prisoners. It is this position who determines the need for and timeliness of an appropriate referral to the physician/provider. This position is expected to initiate and sustain life-saving care and measures as appropriate, as well as perform the full range of clinical nursing duties. This position is expected to exercise considerable independent judgment in selecting the most appropriate course of action. The nurse at this level may work as an emergency clinic nurse, an inpatient staff nurse, a mental health nurse, an infirmary nurse, or as an ambulatory clinic nurse. The employee may be hired for a specific area, but may be held responsible to move to any or all ambulatory/inpatient/infirmary settings within the complex/facility. The nurse mentors and coaches entry level RNs into their role and encourages development in professional practice.

Required Education and Experience

Education

A.D.N., B.S.N., or diploma in nursing

Experience

No specific type or amount of experience is required with possession of a master's degree in nursing. OR

Six months of experience equivalent to a Registered Nurse P11 in state service, in combination with a possession of a bachelor's degree in nursing. OR One year of experience equivalent to a Registered Nurse P11 in state service, in combination with a diploma or an associate's degree in nursing.

Alternate Education and Experience

Registered Nurse 12

Possession of a master's degree in nursing or possession of a bachelor's degree in nursing and six months of experience equivalent to a Registered Nurse P11 may be substituted for the experience requirement.

Additional Requirements and Information

Possession of a Michigan license in good standing as a registered nurse.

The Department of Corrections may screen out job applicants who have been convicted of a felony in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017. Applicants who have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible for employment with the Department of Corrections until satisfactory completion of any sentence imposed, including parole or probation.
