Serials Librarian

Under the direction of the Collection Development Coordinator, this position is responsible for the selection, acquisition, selected cataloging, and related collection development tasks necessary for the management of the serials (periodicals and newspapers) collections in all formats in the Library-Archives of the Wisconsin Historical Society. This position is also responsible for evaluating and acquiring new content formats, including knowledge of formats for electronic serials resources, and for helping to manage the librarys transition from print to electronic serials resources. This position also works in cooperation with other professional Library-Archives staff members to plan, develop, coordinate, and implement all serials works.

A minimally qualified candidate will have experience in all of the following:

  • Experience leading and/or directing the work of staff (e.g. assigning daily tasks, training new staff on processes, or making staff schedules)
  • Experience working in professional library or archives setting utilizing library theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective Library and Information Services
  • Experience working with Serials, Periodicals or Special Collections
  • Experience using a complex library database (e.g. Alma, OCLC, WorldCat, LAS)

In addition to minimum qualifications, a well-qualified candidate will have experience in the following areas:

  • Information and Library Sciences coursework (i.e. Collection Management, Classifying and Cataloguing, Reference Services)
  • Experience providing reference services (i.e. working with the public, answering questions via phone, email or in person)
  • Experience working with electronic periodical management
