This is an excellent opportunity for a Media Relations Associate (40hrs/wk) at our Madison Administration Office. 

PURPOSE OF POSITION:  
Under the direction of the Media and Message Manager, the Media Relations Associate supports and executes media strategies and content development that elevate the mission of PPWI. This role serves as the first point of contact for all media inquiries and is actively involved in responding to these inquiries and planning and implementing earned media and other communications strategies. The Media Relations Associate identifies the best spokesperson for media opportunities and works with the Media and Message Manager to coordinate training and develop necessary background materials and talking points. Special emphasis is placed on cultivating relationships with non-political reporters to uplift PPWI’s mission.  

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: 
The Media Relations Associate must possess a strong personal commitment to reproductive health, rights, and justice and the goals and philosophies of PPWI. They must have proven outstanding written and oral communication skills, knowledge of AP style and the ability to translate complex information (medical, legal, legislative) information for a variety of audiences. They must have an understanding of public relations including various media styles and formats and possess a demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Office suite of products. 

This person must take initiative, anticipate problems, and come up with innovative solutions. They must have the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast paced, deadline driven environment. The Media Relations Associate must be flexible and ready to take advantage of unexpected opportunities, push work through obstacles, and adapt quickly as things change.  

The Media Relations Associate must be able to diplomatically respond to inquiries or concerns from reporters, supporters, opponents, and the general public. They must show a commitment to customer service by answering these inquiries in a professional, timely manner. Must have a commitment to racial equity and inclusion and be able to proactively spot and resolve issues in communication materials. They must be committed to cultivating relationships with the media.  

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  The position is predominantly sedentary requiring the ability to sit, bend, stand and walk.  May require occasional stooping, reaching, stair-climbing and repetitive motions of the hands and wrist related to writing and typing at an electronic keyboard.  Effective speech and hearing ability to allow for effective communication. Rarely requires kneeling, pushing/pulling and repetitive motions of the feet.  

Physical demands of the position necessitate hearing, talking, handling and grasping regularly.  May require lifting up to 30 pounds. Specific vision conditions include close vision reading.  Requires the ability to operate a computer, telephone, fax, copy machine and calculator. 

WORKING CONDITIONS: 
The position is generally performed in an office environment but involves frequent interruptions.  The noise level is generally low to quiet.  The work environment characteristics are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position.  Reasonable accommodations, however, may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform said essential functions. 

Evening and/or weekend hours may frequently be necessary. 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:   
A Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Public Relations and 1 year of related professional work experience in a media environment.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Support media strategy and content development: 
  • Draft talking points, background materials, and press releases 
  • Serve as first point of contact for media. Triage incoming requests by responding or passing off to the appropriate staff member.  
  • Train and prepare PPWI spokespeople for interviews.   
  • Maintaining and updating necessary media information: 
  • Track and distribute PPWI media clips to staff and relevant stakeholders 
  • Maintain media contact database  
  • Develop relationships and strategies to creatively engage the media and elevate the mission: 
  • Cultivate and/or maintain relationships with media professionals with a special emphasis on those who cover health care and education 
  • Suggest innovations in media strategy 
  • Utilize digital platforms to elevate communications strategies: 
  • Create interesting, relevant content for blog 
  • Coordinate with Digital Specialist to ensure website content is up to date and aligned with current messaging and goals
