Position Summary:

Under the guidance of the Director and supervising RN, established departmental policies and procedures, and specific instructions, the Multi-skilled Technician performs a variety of routine tasks to support the delivery of safe, effective, cost-efficient patient care of all population, age-specific patient groups, in inpatient/outpatient settings, as delegated by the RN. These tasks may include all or a combination of the following: assists with patient orders, reports, and other documents, as needed. Responsible for organizing work load as assigned. Provide assistance in transporting, transferring and lifting, perform cleaning functions in patient care unit as delegated, perform selected diagnostic tests, close observation in the monitoring of patients in continuous observation of monitored EKG patterns of patients on telemetry, skillful and appropriate specimen collection. May assist patients with basic patient care needs.

* Provides direct patient care as delegated by RN staff.

* Provides clerical support and coordinate services for the corresponding unit including nursing personnel.

* Provides clerical support to the patient care unit through ensuring patient medical record is properly assembled, Accurately transcribing orders and enters Consults into the computer (if applicable).

* Acts as a receptionist for the unit by directing, assisting, and communicating to patients, families, visitors, co-workers and other departmental personnel.

* Delivers specimens, picks up medication and other items according to established policies, procedures and or guidelines.

* Demonstrates ability to access and use computer systems.

* Demonstrates commitment to the continuum of care by optimizing patient flow: updates bed census timely, facilitates transfer/discharge of patients.

* Assists other departmental personnel when picking up/returning patients, assisting to transport patients as needed, and facilitating new/transfer patient to unit.

* Monitors and records vital signs.

* Assists in providing personal hygiene and physical care needs.

* Accurately measures, records, and reports intake and output.

* Obtains and records daily weight.

* Performs blood glucose testing using blood glucose meter.

* Reports changes in patient's status promptly to RN.

* Performs as patient care companion when needed.

* Assists in the admission, transfer and discharge process.

* Acts as receptionist for unit; has limited use of the hospital information systems according to hospital policy dependent on the need of unit.

* Checks and documents refrigerator temperatures as delegated, reporting variances to appropriate personnel.

* Keeps patient environment clean; performs unit housekeeping needs.

* Performs comfort round.

* Establishes and maintains cooperative relationship with patients, staff, and physician.

* Performs daily/weekly scheduled maintenance as applicable, to maintain area in clean and orderly condition.

* Participates in all required safety in-services; reviews departmental policies annually or as needed.

* Reports safety issues and broken equipment appropriately, and adheres to patient safety precautions. Keeps hallways clear of obstruction.

* Communicates with patient's family, physicians, and unit personnel and peers in an accurate, courteous, and professional manner.

* Establishes/maintains effective and respectful communication in all collaborative relationships.

* Maintains accountability in maintenance and timely renewal of required certifications.

* Supports department-based goals and contributes to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.

* Rotates weekend/call responsibilities in a professional and accountable fashion if applicable.

* Performs duties in accordance with that of hospital policies and procedures, and regulatory agency guidelines.

* Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education Level


* High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)

* Completion of:

an approved formal training program


Related work experience

which resulted in eligibility in obtaining required certification/registry below



* BLS certification (through an approved AHA program)

* Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) with Texas Department of Aging & Disability

* Certified EKG Technician through nationally recognized accredited agency.

* Testing personnel as a generalist or in a specialized area within the lab to include:

* Knowledge of QC practices, instrument operation and maintenance, and result reporting.

* Knowledge of proficiency testing standards and practices.

* Demonstrates knowledge of patient identification standards and adheres to same.
