The Residence Counselor is responsible to implement the IPP, attend to individuals’ personal care needs, oversee the individuals’ safety, keep nurses advised, participate in Agency activities, transport and accompany individuals’ on activities and assist in daily housekeeping and other facility-related duties and maintain documentation.
Activities include but are not limited to the following:
• Promote the individuals’ independence by implementing the Individual Program Plan.
• Attend to personal, self-care and other program needs that the individuals cannot independently accomplish.
• Oversee the safety and well being of the individuals.
• Advise the nurses regarding the individuals’ medical and dietary concerns, dispense medication, if certified.
• Participate in activities as part of the treatment team that may include meetings, trainings and committees.
• Transport and accompany residents as required for appointments and community activities.
• Assist in the daily housekeeping and laundry routine, report house damage and complete work orders; clean wheelchairs, clean and gas-up agency vans.
• Must be able to attain and maintain SCIP-R and CPR certification.
• Maintain documentation as required.
• Establish a work environment that creates positive communication between supervisors and employees and assimilates new employees to the Agency’s culture, values and mission.
• Ensure compliance with all pertinent government and agency regulations and operating standards
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS/ QUALIFICATIONS/ EXPERIENCE
• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Up to 1 year of experience.
• Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances are warranted.
• Knowledge of basic computer programs (Including all Windows program, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, Internet Browser, Access, Word and Excel).
• Travel and transport is required. Must have a valid NYS Driver’s License.
• This position has regular and substantial unsupervised or unrestricted physical contact with individuals receiving services and is required by law to be fingerprinted for a criminal history record check under OPWDD (Office for People with Developmental Disabilities).
• May be exposed to verbal and physical aggression of individuals.
• Job related tasks involve exposure to blood, body fluids, tissue or the potential for skin or mucous membrane contact from spills or splashes of these substances. May have exposure to unpredictable individuals and situations when working at sites.
• OSHA Exposure Category I
• While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear and must have fluency in the English language.
• The employee frequently is required to stand, sit and walk and must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time.
• Employee will work with individuals with disabilities and may be exposed to verbal and physical aggression.
• Employee must have the ability to lift 60lbs.
• Must have the ability to bend, lift and squat, reach with arms and work with fingers.
