Requisition Number: 31597 Job Title: LIBRARY ASSISTANT IV Working Title: Selection and Outreach Support Assistant (SOSA) Salary: $25.24 - $33.14 hourly edu/about/jobs-ucla-library Job Summary Statement: Reporting to the Head, International Studies, the Selection and Outreach Support Assistant (SOSA) supports collections and research services activities in European Studies and classics. The SOSA provides support to the International Studies Team more generally in the area of outreach, particularly through the coordination of events, planning of exhibits and management of social media. The SOSA supervises up to 3 student assistants who work on collection-related projects in European Studies and classics, and projects in other areas as determined by the needs of the department.

International Studies is composed of area and subject specialists, who are responsible for building, managing, and providing access to the research collections in all formats, including government information and cartographic resources, in support of humanities and social sciences research and teaching in the area studies. IS librarians serve the faculty and students in these disciplines by providing high-level reference and research services, in person, via e-mail, and telephone. The department collaborates in staffing the Research Library Research Assistance desk and providing digital reference. IS librarians actively participate in UCLA's teaching and learning program, taking the lead in the design and delivery of specialized instruction sessions for upper division and graduate level courses. Subject specialist librarians in IS work closely together and in cooperation with librarians from other UCLA Library units to meet faculty and student needs. They serve as liaisons to academic departments and research units in their areas of responsibility. Liaison librarians are also responsible for library exhibits and digitization projects in their subject areas.   • Reading ability in at least one of the following languages: French, German, Italian, Swedish, Danish, Dutch.

  • Working knowledge of various academic library functions and operations such as reference, collection development, and acquisitions.

  • Excellent written communication skills, specifically writing skills to compose a variety of documents (correspondence, reports) that are logical, concise, and grammatically correct, as well as editing skills to review and correct correspondence and reports for grammar, spelling, syntax, and content.

  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills, specifically to: interact effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds in a high volume, continuous, public contact setting; present information successfully in group settings; represent the department effectively in interactions with other library units and institutions; and provide information or instruction to staff and library patrons.

  • Flexibility, openness to change as needs of the department evolve, including willingness to learn new skills.

  • Familiarity with cultures, countries, and regions of Europe.

  • Knowledge of scholarship and publishing in some area of the social sciences and humanities related to Europe.

  • Knowledge of LC call numbers, bibliographic filing rules and bibliographic elements (e.g., author, title, imprint, and series statements).

  • Working knowledge of and ability to search library catalogs as well as national databases and commercially-produced subject databases.

  • Working knowledge of general reference tools in print and electronic formats, and of reference practices, policies, and procedures sufficient to answer library user questions and to make appropriate referrals.

  • Skill in recognizing, defining, and analyzing problems, situations, or procedures to define objectives and implement action plans and recommendations. Ability to gather and analyze data and prepare concise, logical reports.

  • Excellent attention to detail, demonstrated capacity for carrying out tasks in an accurate manner, and ability to check own work for accuracy.

  • Working knowledge of PC hardware and software and a demonstrated ability to work in a networked Windows environment. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, especially Word, Outlook, Access, and Excel. Working knowledge of the Internet.

  • Ability to lift boxes weighing boxes weighing up to 35 pounds, and maneuver fully loaded book trucks.

  • Familiarity with book fund allocation and accounting reports on integrated library system, such as Voyager.
