About Us

KIPP SoCal Public Schools (KIPP SoCal) is a nonprofit organization that operates tuition-free, open-enrollment, public charter schools focused on preparing students in systemically under-resourced communities in Southern California for choice filled lives. In July 2019, KIPP LA Public Schools and KIPP San Diego Public Schools united to become KIPP SoCal Public Schools to better meet the needs of our students. We currently operate 19 schools, educate approximately 8,200 students and support an additional 4,300 alumni who are attending high school and college.

Director of Operations Opportunity

  • The Director of Operations sets KIPP SoCal's vision and strategy for operations, accountable to leading the development of high-quality operational systems at our schools to support teaching and learning. They will define school-based operational excellence for KIPP SoCal and manage others to ensure the schools achieve such excellence. The Director of Operations reports to and serves as a thought partner to the Chief Operating Officer, leads and holds our regional and school-based operations team accountable.

Strategy, Planning & Performance Management

  • Build vision and lead strategic planning to drive excellence in school and regional operations across KIPP SoCal
  • Lead annual and multi-year planning process for operations and manage execution of annual and long term plans
  • Identify, develop and implement scalable operational processes and structures that support powerful schools as KIPP SoCal continues to grow in size and complexity
  • Oversee the development and implementation of progress monitoring systems to assess all aspects of operations regional health
  • Develop and oversee the KIPP SoCal operations budget

Team Development & Management

  • Provide differentiated operations coaching to a portfolio of schools
  • Manage 6 direct reports overseeing a regional team and school-based operations team of approximately 60
  • Recruit, mentor and support a diverse and exceptional team of professionals. Diligently seeks opportunities for professional development, acting as a coach and sounding board, and serves as an organizational role model in cultivating a culture of high expectations and support
  • Lead the on-boarding and professional development of school-based operations leaders and regional operations teams, including managing talent pipeline and potential career pathways for operations
  • Actively support the development of school leaders and all school operations leadership team members to effectively communicate, motivate, and manage towards operational excellence across KIPP SoCal
  • Facilitate effective communication and feedback between schools and KIPP SoCal's Operations Team

Operational Excellence

  • Drive operational sustainability by ensuring that KIPP SoCal's schools operate in an efficient and effective manner in compliance with local, state and federal regulations
  • Ensure KIPP SoCal develops, refines, and maintains exemplary operations systems & processes in functional areas of responsibility including school nutrition, transportation, student health, student recruitment and enrollment, attendance and data reporting, risk management, emergency preparation, safety and compliance, facilities, and building co-location
  • Oversee operational internal school reviews of school-based systems and procedures to recognize areas of strength, identify areas for improvement, share best practices, and ensure alignment with academic priorities
  • Identify, codify and ensure implementation of best practices in school operations across KIPP SoCal
  • Support the preparation of campuses in start-up by ensuring school systems and checklists, processes and school services are in place (e.g., food services, procurement)
  • Facilitate effective communication, feedback, and collaborative decision making between schools and regional teams (academics, finance, and external impact)

Director of Operations Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience required (MBA or Master's Degree in related field preferred)
  • Has at least five years of progressively increasing operational management experience for a growing, multi-site organization. Prefer experience in charter school operations.
  • Has experience leading, planning, and managing in an entrepreneurial, customer service oriented setting
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to navigate a broad range of strategic issues and make decisions that balance the needs of multiple stakeholders
