DESCRIPTION

The Port of Long Beach is seeking a Maintenance Assistant I Non-Career to fill an open position in the Maintenance Division of the Engineering Bureau. The Maintenance Division is responsible for maintaining the Port's Infrastructure and Port-owned facilities. Their crews include Roads and Streets, Landscaping, Plumbing, Electrical, Garage, Docks & Piers, Carpentry, Building Mechanical, Custodial, General Maintenance as well as a small office staff and warehouse. Their work is generally performed in response to work requests from other Divisions of the Harbor Department or for the Port's tenants on a for-hire basis. Factors that affect their work include inclement weather, special events and the shipping schedules of the Port's tenants. Preventative maintenance work is also performed on an ongoing basis to keep our properties and assets in good condition.

The selected candidate may work up to 29 hours/week or less for up to a 2 year period.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Under supervision, the Maintenance Assistant I Non-Career will be responsible for:

* Performing routine maintenance duties such as emptying trash cans, sweeping, dusting, etc, at Port facilities

* Performing semi-skilled maintenance duties such as shampooing carpets, waxing floors, and brush cleaning decks and other areas

* Assisting clients in moving or storing their items

* Restocking custodial supplies to various locations throughout the Port of Long Beach

* Following both oral and written directions

* May lift and move medium to heavy objects

* Performing other relevant duties as required

REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

Minimum Qualifications

* High school diploma or GED preferred

* Must be able to endure long periods of physical labor

* Experience using basic hand and power tools is required

* Previous experience with stripping/waxing floors and maintaining carpets is desirable

* Must be able to work independently without extensive direction or oversight
