Mechanical Design Engineer

Position Core Role:

The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for equipment design from specification through engineering, design, detailing, and parts fabrication to assembly while maintaining targets for Quality, Cost and Delivery. This position requires flexibility while working in a fast paced team environment to produce equipment for the production of automotive component parts and assemblies.

Essential Function and Responsibilities:
  • Use customer documentation and/or new model part prints/models to identify and implement equipment change points that are required to meet customer expectations.
  • Develop specification documents, concepts and line layout drawings detailing required work.
  • Machine design, modeling, component sizing and specification, and part detailing.
  • Create poject documentation including Bills of Material, spare parts lists, Operation and Maintenance Manuals, assembly procedures and check sheets, repair procedures, management reports, and project schedules.
  • Perform engineering calculations to determine component sizing and requirements, machine cycle time, FEA, FMEA, static and dynamic accuracy.
  • Project management of multiple projects (potentially at multiple plants) including critical path planning, cost and hours variance tracking and reporting, and leading team meetings.
Daily Tasks:
  • Utilize Catia,Solidworks, and AutoCAD to make layouts, concepts, model comparison, line arrangement drawings, and detail drawings.
  • Use Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio) to create and share project documentation and content.
  • Use verbal and written communication skills to report project status and lead meetings to gain consensus.
  • Use Microsoft Project and Excel to create and update project schedules
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Musts: Strong Customer focus, strong communication skills (verbal and written), ability to managing changing schedules and priorities, AutoCad 2012 or higher knowledge, 3D Design experience, ability to analyze problems and implement improvements in existing designs and equipment, working knowledge of the metric system, Microsoft Office Suite experience.
Wants: Catia and Solidworks experience, experience in taking a design from concept through manufacturing and install, working knowledge of hydraulics and pneumatics, Project Management experience.

Required Experience:
  • 3-5 years mechanical design experience is required, preferably with automated production equipment
Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor's of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related field/discipline
  • Associate's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field/discipline with two years of additional relevant experience
  • No degree with four years of additional relevant experience
Other Factors:
  • 90% office environment, 10% hands on (in-plant investigation, machine build, and install support).
  • Work occasionally requires entering environments with various cutting oils, coolants, sealers, paint residue, etc.
  • Some travel may be required to multiple Honda production sites as well as vendor sites for equipment confirmation.
