General Transportation Tech I

Performs entry-level work related to transportation activities such as construction inspection; routine and contract maintenance inspection; and basic roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; assisting with traffic control and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform assignments following specific instructions and are subject to frequent review by the immediate supervisor.

General Transportation Tech II:

Performs routine work related to transportation activities such as construction inspection; routine and contract maintenance inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Duties

The essential duties for this job include:

General Transportation Tech I

* Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mail box supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.

* Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.

* Assists in sanding or cleaning bridges and roads, posting warning signs, helping the public and performing other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents and hazardous material spills.

* Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic; as required moves items related to these activities.

* Learns to operate light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper and mower.

* Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.

* Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.

* Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.

* Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms and PMI.

* Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

General Transportation Tech II

* As required, will be assigned as the only inspector on a very small project.

* Maintains highways and right-of-way, perform skilled roadway repairs, erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs, hauls materials and equipment to job sites.

* Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end-loader one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper and dump truck.

* Operates light equipment such as front-end loader one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, sperader box, backhoe, street sweeper and mower.

* Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents and hazardous material spills.

Licenses and Certifications

The following Licenses and/or Certifications are required for this job:

* Safety Impact Certificate

* Commercial Driver Certificate

* Must have a Commercial Driver License Class A at time of application

Safety Impact certifications are not required at the time of application. As required, the Safety Impact, Commercial Driver and/or Vessel Crewmember certification(s) will be issued by TxDOT at the time of hire.

Other Conditions:

* This is a Safety Impact position (either Safety Impact, Commercial Driver and/or Vessel Crew Member) and will be subject to random drug testing.

Conditions of Employment

Must have a Commercial Driver License Class A at time of application.

* Required to work weekends and holidays.

* Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.

* Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.

* Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.

* Successful completion of a criminal background check to include verification of identification and residency, and a national fingerprint-based records check at the employer's expense is required.

* Driver's record check will be conducted by the Department. Satisfactory driving records are required for driving state or personal vehicles and motor driven equipment to conduct agency business.

* Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours.

* External final applicants for any department position who could potentially be required to drive for the department must pass a drug test prior to employment and will be subject to reasonable cause testing during employment.

* External final male applicants who are 18-25 years of age will be required to furnish proof of registration or exemption from registration with the Selective Service System.
