Overview

Job Summary

We are looking for a trustworthy leader who want to make positive connections with members, has a keen eye for safety, and set the tone for a safe environment for kids and families. You will play a key role in ensuring safety standards are met – in the water and on the deck, engaging members and providing leadership as needed for the onboarding and training of new Lifeguards and doing admin tasks such as creating the staff schedule. You have the ability to lead others and exercise great judgement.

Responsibilities

Provides leadership and support to branch Lifeguards including conducting effective onboarding and training for new employees. Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, on deck and surrounding areas. Prevents accidents by maintaining constant observation of the pool area, enforcing health and safety rules and maintaining emergency readiness. May perform duties related to opening or closing the pool. Develops positive relationships with participants and parents encouraging involvement and identifying potential volunteers. Assists as needed with pool administration including the creation of the pool/lifeguard schedule. Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six“ model. Completes related reports as required. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary. Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed. Performs routine maintenance of the pool and surrounding areas to ensure cleanliness. Checks pool and rescue equipment and promptly reports any problems. Sets up and stores equipment for recreational swims and assists instructors with set up. Maintains aquatic program areas and equipment with a high attention to cleanliness and safety. Conveys basic information on YMCA programs and schedules to members and, as appropriate, refers members to other YMCA programs and/or staff. Attends staff meetings and trainings as required. Leads meetings as required. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

18 years of age or older Current state approved first-aid certification. Current state approved CPR certification – Pro or Basic Life Support. Lifeguard certification – YMCA or Red Cross.

• YMCA of Greater Seattle scanning training or equivalent* Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness. Must be observant and able to react calmly, quickly and with good judgment in an emergency.

  • If Red Cross certified, must complete Y Lifeguard certification class within 90 days of hire.
