Sheet Metal Supervisor

Job Purpose:

The Sheet Metal Supervisor will organize, coordinate, and supervise employees and activities within the fabrication department to ensure an effective and efficient fabrication operation that meets safety, quality, and production standards.

Essential Functions:

* Assigns work to department personnel to attain department objectives using knowledge of production processes, company policies, production schedules, work orders, equipment capacity and employee capabilities.

* Readily perceives and effectively responds to schedules and product flows essential to supervising highly productive, cost-effective, quality-oriented manufacturing operations.

* Monitors and controls established procedures to ensure compliance with quality standards.

* Analyzes information and prepares reports for management review on the production efficiency, quality, personnel needs and strategic direction for the department.

* Confers regularly with other functional Supervisors to coordinate operations and activities.

* Develops and leads cost improvement processes in areas such as inventory reduction, safety, training, floor space management and others, as needed.

* Facilitates and promotes company policy and the company Quality Improvement program within all department work groups.

* Recommends and initiates improvements to production processes, to increase manufacturing efficiency.

* Recommends product changes to improve product quality and/or reduce cost.

* Champions Continuous Improvement activities within area of influence.

* Embraces and promotes the use of structured problem solving methods.

* Establishes and controls procedures to meet production schedules.

* Establish and control procedures to ensure production of conforming fabricated assembly components.

* Work with manufacturing engineering to improve routing methods, standards and tooling. Develop operation planning sheet for production/prototype.

* Maintains departmental budgets within company guidelines.

* Establishes and monitors cost control systems to achieve department budget objectives.

* Interview, recommend hire, train and evaluate shop employees; discipline; ensure adherence to company policies and regulations; maintain morale.

* Recommends and/or administers personnel actions in accordance with company policies and procedures.

* Responsible for continually improving the skill and individual output of all production team members to achieve targeted production levels.

* Set department goals and develop outline for achievement.

* Responsible for compliance with safety and housekeeping requirements.

* Propose and, validate capital equipment projects.

* Performs additional duties and assignments, as required.


* 5 years minimum supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment.

* Experience leading continuous improvement initiatives to a successful end result.

* Computer literate with experience using e-mail, word processing and spreadsheet applications (Microsoft Office), time and attendance program and ERP.

* Ability to learn and understand software and complete transactions pertaining to fabrication or welding operations.

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.

* Demonstrated ability to supervise diverse work groups in a team environment using effective listening, coaching, training, investigative and problem-solving skills, ability to exercise initiative, sound judgment and effective time management in a fast-paced environment with limited supervision.

* Read and interpret weld process according to AWS and ASME section IX.

* Ability to understand and apply workplace safety procedures.

* Practical knowledge of manufacturing processes and equipment required. Prior experience with capital equipment projects highly preferred.

* Proficient in structural/vessel fitting, Mig/Fluxcore/Tig/Subarc welding,sanitary weld process, manual presses, CNC plasma burners, CNC laser, shears, rolls and similar equipment.
