Job Purpose

The Mechanical Design II Engineer’s main purpose is to work with the project team engineers to concept and design functional systems and strive to produce these systems on time and in budget.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Must work well with SolidWorks and be proficient in modeling, assemblies, drawings, sheet metal, weldments, BOM’s, configurations, templates, etc.

  • Help and maintain all of the mechanical group’s software (i.e. SolidWorks).

  • Collaborate with project team, peers and management to assure design direction/changes are understood.

  • Perform proper research on items specified for use in automation systems and machines.

  • Make sure designs comply with all quality and safety requirements.

  • Understanding of mechanical and fluid power principles.

  • Design for manufacturability, cost effectiveness, and time reduction.

  • Design for aesthetics when cost effective.

  • Help develop and follow processes and procedures.

  • Develop effective work orders with complete instructions.

  • Rework reduction.

  • Responsible for mechanical budget and timeline on individual projects.

  • Engineering design completeness.

  • Reusing existing design where feasible.

  • Updating drawings throughout a project.

  • Develop designs that can be reused.

  • Updating progress and notes in timeline tracking software.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Must be proficient in using SolidWorks and Microsoft Office products.

  • 5+ years of experience in designing custom equipment (robotic systems, material handling, special machines, fixtures).

  • Mechanical design or engineering degree a plus but not required.

  • Ability to concept, design, and detail a project from start to finish (fabrications, sheet metal, tooling, etc.)

  • Must have experience in specification and verification of manufactured and purchased components used in designs.

  • Knowledge of machine tools a plus.

  • Hands on shop assembly and/or machining a plus.

  • Ability to read and understand mechanical, fluid power prints, and understand basic electrical principles.

  • Good customer service skills will be required.

  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position.

  • Independent personal transportation to office is required. Work vehicles are provided for travel to and from customer’s locations and supplier sites.

  • The individual must demonstrate attention to detail and finishing.
