  • The primary responsibilities of the Assistant Director of Pharmacy Services are to oversee the day-to-day operation of the Pharmacy and to assist the Director in the development and implementation of the goals and objectives of the department. The Assistant Director is also responsible for assuming the responsibilities of the Director in his absence.
  • Develops a workflow plan for daily pharmacy activities (internally/externally), and adapts the workflow as necessary to a changing environment.
  • Develops and adjusts the staffing plan in accordance with departments workflow and budgetary needs.
  • Oversees the following groups:
    • Pharmacy Technicians
    • Pharmacists
  • Monitors pharmacy inventory and assists in acquisition of medications.
  • Works with the Pharmacy Director to ensure that pharmacy standards and quality are met and maintained. Recommends changes to the protocol that would improve the overall quality and care for the patients.
    • Proactively prepares for JCAHO/CMS site visits
    • Completes administrative reports in a timely and high quality manner.
    • Develops policies and procedures for daily operations.
  • Involved in recruiting, interviewing, selecting and training of new employees.
  • Oversees compliance for the department’s compounding program, including USP 795/797/800 IV standards.
  • Follows hospital guidelines in maintaining and improving staff performance (i.e. disciplinary actions, performance improvement plans, performance appraisals).
  • Provides staff development and training within the pharmacy. This includes competency testing, technician registration testing and renewal, and other developmental/operational needs.
  • Assists Director with budget maintenance and control.
  • Attends and actively participates in various hospital and departmental meetings/committees, such as the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. Participates and/or leads various initiatives and accordingly helps creates materials needed.
  • Consistently demonstrates effective communication, both written and verbal, with all departmental, hospital staff, and vendors.
  • In the absence of the Director of Pharmacy, assumes leadership responsibility for the department.

  • Staff adheres to all C.A.R.E. Standards
  • Must be able to understand and clearly communicate with all areas of health care personnel
  • Must maintain sufficient pharmaceutical knowledge for the safe and effective distribution of medications.
  • Pharm.D. from an approved school of pharmacy
  • MBA desired
  • Current Registration as a Pharmacist in the State of Massachusetts and has no disciplinary actions taken
  • Achieves mandatory annual continuing education credits
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a Pharmacist in a Hospital Pharmacy is preferred.
  • Prior Supervisory/Management experience preferred.
