Congineer - LS&I Railroad

Accountable for safe work and operating practices, thorough knowledge of the General Code of Operating Rules, knowledge of and compliance with all Federal Railroad Administration Guidelines.

* Responsible for safe and efficient operation of a locomotive(s) and train

* Operation of locomotive, requires the manipulation of throttle and brake controls as well as interpreting gauges and controls and making timely operational decisions

* Must be able to manipulate valves and switches both inside and outside the cab

* Must be able to operate handbrakes on both locomotives and cars

* Ascends and descends steps and ladders to get on and off the equipment

* Work on freight trains, take direction from conductor, foremen and supervisors

* Line switches

* Couple cars

* Connect air hose couplings

* Responsible for locomotive inspections

* Perform switching, make up and break up of trains and road haul of trains

* Maintain accurate records of cars handled, repairs performed, track conditions encountered and corrective action taken

* Responsible for the safe work practices around the railroad fixed plant and railroad rolling stock

* Communication with customers and connecting carriers

* Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

* Minimum of a high school education or general education development (GED).

* 1-3 years of job related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience, preferred.

* Perceived aptitude in the transportation field and demonstrated desire to learn required.

* Excellent reading and communication skills.

* Must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook).

* Applicant will be subject to CFR Part 219 Control of Alcohol & Drug Use and CFR Part 228 Covered Service Regulations.

* Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).

* Must practice safe work habits to prevent on the job accidents and injuries.

* Must utilize all protective equipment as assigned/required.

* This is a call board position, which requires being subject to call 24/7.

* Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week in all weather conditions. You may be required to work various shifts, overtime, holidays and weekends.

* Must be able to successfully pass the General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR) exam.

* Must have current valid state Driver's License and be eligible to be insured under the LS&I vehicle insurance company.
