Per Diem Nurses on the Telemetry / Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery Unit at MD Anderson Cancer Center primarily serves patients with cancers arising in the chest, including lung and esophageal cancers, as well as less common thoracic malignancies. Because the unit has 32 surgical telemetry beds, patients having surgical procedures who may have developed an arrhythmias will also be admitted to the unit as well. The Department's research program emphasizes cellular and molecular biology of thoracic cancers, and incorporates that knowledge into the development of novel cancer prevention and treatment strategies.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, an RN license, and at least eighteen months of recent RN experience in medical/surgical, telemetry, or ICU setting.
This position is allowed to work a maximum of 19 hours per week on average.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Accountable for the management and provision of patient care in assigned area. Assesses patient's needs for nursing care and multidisciplinary team. Collaborates with physicians, other services, patient and patient's family to plan care and evaluate outcomes. Improves practice by integrating results and theories of research studies. Participates in data collection for current studies. Demonstrates clinical competency and compassion in providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures and managing emergencies. Documents care according to established standards. Accesses, inputs and retrieves information from computer systems. Assures continuity of care through appropriate discharge planning, patient education and coordination of services. Acts as a patient and family advocate in order to uphold patient rights. Trains, coaches and assists team members to ensure optimum patient care and efficient use of resources.
Required: Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.
Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Nursing
Required: One year of relevant clinical nursing experience.
Preferred: At least 18 months of recent RN experience in medical/surgical, telemetry, or ICU setting.
Required: Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN). Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
Preferred: Certification in oncology or specialty practice area. American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.
