Rice University’s Department of Statistics is dedicated to the advancement of the scientific discipline of statistics, the innovative application of statistics to meet modern scientific, engineering and societal challenges, the expert education of students in statistics and other disciplines, and statistical leadership in the local, national and international communities.

Applications are currently being accepted to fill a full-time, 12-month non-tenure-track teaching faculty position at the level of Assistant Teaching Professor at the Department of Statistics in the School of Engineering. This position is expected to teach four (2+2) statistics courses per year at the undergraduate level, including introductory courses in statistics and data science, as well as capstone based courses. Candidates should also be interested in program and curriculum development, especially in the area of data science. This is a 3-year appointment with the possibility of renewal and promotion to the level of Associate Teaching Professor.

The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to teaching, advising, and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds. Consistent with the National Research Council’s report, Convergence: Facilitating Transdisciplinary Integration of Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, and Beyond, we are seeking candidates who have demonstrated ability to lead and work in groups that integrate knowledge from engineering, mathematics, and computational, natural, social, and behavioral sciences to solve societal problems using a convergent approach.

Position Qualifications

A Ph.D. degree in statistics or related disciplines is required. Strong applicants whose primary degree is not in statistics, biostatistics, econometrics, machine learning, data science or a related area will also be considered with evidence of strong statistical training or if their background exhibits independence and excellence in one of these areas. The candidate must have a strong interest in teaching, mentoring, enthusiasm to work students, and provide evidence of teaching excellence with outstanding communication skills. Strong computational skills are required. Preference will be given to candidates who wish to focus their careers on the development and practicing of innovative teaching strategies and novel pedagogic technologies. A teaching statement, a sample syllabus of a recently taught (statistics) course and recent teaching evaluations are required for application consideration.
