Supervises, instructs, performs, and guides other planning personnel as assigned to initiate, study, evaluate, and develop plans related to Hawaiian Electric's transmission or distribution systems for the Hawaiian Electric Company, Maui Electric Company and Hawaii Electric Light Company systems.

Brief Description

The Transmission Planning Division of the Transmission & Distribution Planning Department at Hawaiian Electric Company has one (1) Management vacancy available. (Role: Supervisor)

Fundamental Responsibilities

Transmission Division:

As an exceptionally competent planning engineer in all conventional aspects of higher assignments and plans; conducts work requiring judgment using independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria. Devises new approaches to problems encountered. Is expert in using analysis tools (including Power Flow and Stability programs) to initiate, evaluate and recommend plans for future generation and transmission facilities including those proposed by Independent Power Producers. Independently performs assignments. Collaborates on technical complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed plans for projects. Mentors direct reports on technical issues, work performance, career advancement, work processes, etc.

Has complete knowledge of Machine and Generator dynamics including exciters, governors, droop, and boiler control as it relates to conducting dynamic simulation studies. Also needs to have a working understand relaying, especially under frequency and reverse flow relays. Has basic knowledge of DC lines, batteries, and associated inverters used in both utility scale and customer installations. Has detailed knowledge of all types of renewable energy sources and uses such knowledge in daily work. Is required to provide direct regulatory support (answer PUC information requests, prepare PUC justifications, represent the Companies in briefings, etc.), meet with key stakeholders to support the IGP process, meet with developers.

Distribution Division:

As an exceptionally competent planning engineer in all conventional aspects of higher assignments and plans; conducts work requiring judgment using independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria. Devises new approaches to problems encountered. Is expert in using analysis tools (including Power Flow programs) to initiate, evaluate and recommend plans for future distributed energy resources and distribution facilities including those on the customer side of the meter. Independently performs assignments. Collaborates on technical complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed plans for projects.

Has complete knowledge of equipment used in the distribution of electricity including transformers, switchgear, and communication devices. Also needs to have a working understanding of relaying, especially under frequency and reverse flow relays. Has basic knowledge of DC lines, batteries, and associated inverters used in both utility scale and customer installations. Has detailed knowledge of all types of renewable energy sources and uses such knowledge in daily work.

Transmission and Distribution:

Responsibilities include supervisory functions including performance feedback, performance reports, identifying performance issues, identifying training needs, and working to improve the performance of all aspects of the Division.

Collaborates and leads other planners and engineers to establish work priorities and is a resource for analysis of technical problems. Provides training and training review of planning tools and procedures.

Conducts detail planning studies, basic economic, reliability and probability studies to create planning reports. Prepares reports, recommendations and related planning studies in accordance with standard electrical systems modeling practices.

Conducts planning studies, prepares reports, and reviews/comments on technical reports and studies prepared by others.

Provides regulatory support, interface with key stakeholders and developers, serves as inter-company liaison to support transmission planning work.

Knowledge Requirements

* Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or equivalent of the degree in appropriate education, or 10 years of equivalent experience.

* Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of electrical system planning and modeling, project engineering, associated with electric utility facilities normally acquired through a minimum of 5 years relevant engineering experience.

* Working knowledge of personal computers and/or mainframe systems and related software applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, etc.

* Working knowledge of City, State and Federal laws, regulations and procedures as related to specific projects and assignments.

Skills Requirements

* Demonstrated leadership skills including effective written, oral and listening communications skills and interpersonal skills, in order to work effectively with all levels of the company, with outside contractors and consultants, governmental agencies, community groups and customers.

* Ability to conceptualize new ideas quickly.

* Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.

* Demonstrated interpersonal skills to handle confrontational, difficult and/or sensitive issues. Ability to handle such issues with professionalism while using tact, courtesy and discretion.

* Demonstrated in-depth analytical and administrative skills for such tasks as preparing and monitoring project requirements and resolving cost and time constraints, conflicting priorities.

* Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license. Must meet the standards for required driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Required Driving Positions policy. These standards may be adjusted periodically to meet business and safety objectives.

Experience Requirements

* Extensive (10 years) experience in the planning of additions, modifications, extensions, upgrades and arrangements of company generation, transmission, substation, or communication and control systems and facilities.

* A BS degree in engineering in a relevant discipline from an accredited engineering school may be substituted for eight (8) years of experience.

* 2-4 years of leadership or supervisory experience

* State of Hawaii Professional Engineer License in relevant discipline is required.
