Be a representative of The Salvation Army by ringing bells for the Christmas Kettle Campaign at assigned outdoor locations, ensure the Kettle is never left unattended, and greet the public in a friendly manner. Money raised will help fulfill the needs of the hungry, homeless, ill, and lonely.

Responsibilities

  • Greet each passerby in a friendly and respectful manner while ringing the bell (a jingle or two of bell periodically is adequate, prolonged bell ringing can aggravate others).
  • Smile, make eye contact, and be courteous by saying “thank you“ for every donation. Nothing makes a donor feel better and encourages repeat contributions like a simple “thank you“.
  • Stand next to kettle at all times, do not sit/slouch on a chair or the ground.
  • Be clean, well-groomed, and appropriately dressed in a manner consistent with Salvation Army standards. Clothing should not have offensive/controversial language, images, etc. Be prepared to wear clothing that will keep you warm for prolonged periods of time.
  • Arrive on time and accurately complete a timecard each day.
  • Keep kettle stand area neat and free of clutter.
  • Never leave the kettle unattended or with an individual who has not been approved by your supervisor.
  • Do not make change from the kettle or remove anything from the kettle unless your supervisor is present.
  • Never take the kettle home.
  • Avoid obstructing the flow of traffic at any kettle location.
  • Do not eat, text, read, wear headphones, or smoke at the kettle. Refrain from using cell phones/mobile devices unless it is necessary.
  • Do not use profanity or other abusive language or gestures at the kettle.
  • Know the address and phone number of your Corps in order to be prepared to share it with anyone who has questions about the work of The Salvation Army.
  • Comply with requests from store managers and owners (i.e. moving locations, not ringing the bell, etc.). At no point, challenge a retail partner's directions about the location or activity at the kettles. If issues arise, immediately contact supervisor.
  • If a situation arises that requires the attention of your supervisor, call immediately.
  • Refrain from speaking to the media without receiving prior approval from your supervisor. If approached by a reporter, respond with, “I'm sorry. I'm not the best person to respond to your questions. I'll be sure to let the appropriate person know when I'm done with my shift“ or similar.
  • Respond with the following suggested response if a donor asks how their money will be used, “All money raised will be used for social service programs in the local community“ or similar.
  • Kindly state receipts are not available at the kettle, if requested, but will be mailed to the donor. Provide donor with paper and ask for name, address, and amount donated. If donation is cash, confirm the amount on the paper and place paper in the kettle.
  • Do not engage in discussion or debate if a passerby has negative comments about The Salvation Army. A suggested response is, “I'm sorry you feel that way and I'll pass along your complaint. Merry Christmas“ or similar.
  • Be familiar with some of the social service work of The Salvation Army in the community (i.e. locations, key statistics, etc.) in order to respond to common questions.
  • Be familiar with fundraising initiatives such as Online Giving in order to respond to questions from the public.
  • Be prepared with handouts, if requested, but do not be aggressive with handouts and respect the wishes of the donor.

Qualifications

  • Ability to adhere to all COVID-19 safety protocols.
  • Ability to follow instructions with limited supervision.
  • Ability to politely greet and respond to the general public.
  • Ability to abide by required dress code.
  • Ability to ring small hand bell for the duration of the shift.
  • Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  • Ability to stand in one location for extended periods of time in outside weather conditions.
  • Ability to conduct all communications and job duties with the highest level of professionalism.
  • Must be self-motivated and highly enthusiastic.
  • Must be able to lift filled kettles, metal tripods, and signs daily as needed throughout the season.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must be friendly and have a positive attitude.
  • Must be able to respect and promote the interest of The Salvation Army. The individual is not required to embrace the tenets of faith, but he/she is required to promote and respect the mission of The Salvation Army.
